Guest guest
Started semi SCD about 3 weeks, official strict this week. Notice my daughter is sad. . . I think she looks much better and is being weaned off prednisone. She has a mild head cold, but seems really sad for past day or two. . . I know it could be just normal life stuff or still coming to terms with this health issue, but I wonder if there is something connected to the die off of bad bacteria, when it starts, how long it lasts and what some symptoms and counter measures there are. Thanks, Daughter 17 CD june

Die off can definitely cause weird emotions, but so can having to deal with all this!! I've definitely cried more since I've been diagnosed and gone on this diet than I ever have, except for when I was a tiny screaming baby =) I still definitely think it's worth it, and I decided myself to go on and stay on this diet. It's just emotionally difficult sometimes, especially at the beginning. Epsom salt baths are supposed to help die off, and just help you feel better. Die off symptoms can be anything from cravings, to digestive symptoms, to flu symptoms...pretty much anything under the sun =) Pour Dieu, pour terre,Alyssa 15UC April 2008, diagnosed Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds =)

There could definitely be depression/sadness as part of die off. Remember, that there are tons and tons of neurological connections between your gut and your brain, so the gut definitely influences things like this. Guest guest
I think so. I've been on SCD almost 5 months. I had periods where stools looked funny and my mood was really down. I think these were around the time of die offs. I also got a strange rash at one point for about a week. I think there really is a brain-gut connection. Guest guest
I have seen times of sadness, anger, frustration, slight delirium (not even joking, unfortunately), silliness, you name it, from my 7 y.o. when he is having die off. His emotions are EXTREMELY affected by the change in gut ecology but the good thing is this..once the die off has passed he is so cheerful and happy...the little boy we knew 3 years ago who has been somewhere in his head since then. It is always darkest before the dawn, you know. Chrissy mama to 3 boys on SCD 4 months and thriving...thank you Elaine and Dr. Haas!! Guest guest
I had a rip-snorting die-off a month into SCD, even before I did the intro diet (but my diet was totally legal). I had the " flu " kind, and it wasn't a fun week at all. I sure can't say I was cheerful and happy during those six days, so if your daughter is sad, that sounds perfectly reasonable. A lot it happening, after all.

Guest guest
It could also be a delayed reaction to the prednisone. When I go on it it takes a while for certain symptoms to kick in. Depression is definitely one of the main ones I suffer from. I hope she feels better soon! Stacey > > Started semi SCD about 3 weeks, official strict this week. Notice my daughter is sad. . . Guest guest
Prednisone use and tapering off can also cause depression---one of the reasons to taper slowly. Sue R

Guest guest
There is a sense of loss in the beginning if you think you will be missing out on going out, eating your favorite food (like a certain company brand fried chicken) or mexican food, etc. After beging on the diet, the food is better. You try something you used to like and realize it's not as good as you thought. I went through the drive-thru phase looking for something easy and legal and ended up in tears over it ;-). It passes then you get to the point of slowly getting off the diet as you heal and find you prefer SCD food. For me--I like knowing what is going into my food. It's a long road but it's not forever for most people. You can learn a lot of cooking techniques watching Foodnetwork like Ina Garten or Ray. Prednisone--which I was on and off constantly pre-SCD made me an emotional wreck. It's nice to go to yogurt rather than prednisone when you don't feel too good. I originally started in 12/05 and try different things now but prefer to stay on SCD. Check out some of the recipe sites, there is a sub for almost everything that isn't SCD legal.
