Hi Jerry-- I just happened to be seeing my PMD today and

asked him about the potential for liver problems with the

DS-- I sent him everything I had printed out about the

proceedure Dr. Anthone at USC does so he could review it

for me. He said as long as the gall bladder is removed and

the common bile duct is okay and empties into the limb of

the intestine where it grew, there should not be any

furture liver problems. I remember reading about a high

incidence of gall stones post WLS of both kinds, so most

MDs are removing them at the time of the switch, I believe.

Dr. Anthone does take the gall baldder for that very

reason, and he takes the appendix as well, just in case any

of his patients present with abdominal pain, he doesn't

want any confusion about appendix vs. intestinal problem.

You gotta figure, most of us large folks eventually end up

with gall stones from high fat diets, so getting the thing

out pre=problem is no big deal. As I recall, there were a

ton of folks who suddenly had gall stones after loosing a

lot of weight on optifast as well. -- Nan E.-- pre op and

pre approval.

Dear Nan,

I have read that the DS has a 15 year success rate...I sure wish we could

find a few of those 10 to 15 years out and check on their health. Sure

would make this decision alot easier. Everyone here seems to be about 2 to

3 years out. Thanks for the info.

Jerry,

You might try contacting Dr. Hess' office since a lot of those

longterm patients might be his. The DS portion of the surgery does

not bypass the plylorus and duodenum thus absorping more nutrients. I

can't see how the DS would affect the liver more negatively than the

BPD alone. We have some longterm BPD patients on our list. Good luck

and let us know what you find out. Thanks,
