Hi ,

I can't speak for Dr E. but the Mt Sinai group will consider doing

both parts of the surgery at the same time on higher bmi-ers if the

patient is willing to undergo the procedure Open. Dr Pomp told me

the cut-off was usually around a bmi of 60 where, if the patient

insists on having a lap procedure and their bmi is >60, they will

recommend going to the 2 phase process.

I agree with you in that I DO just want to get this over with. I

also believe that a fair amount of the risk associated with surgery,

in general, is the anesthesia. The fewer times I get " put under " the

better!

You need to discuss this with your surgeon and make sure you

understand ALL your options and then choose/prioritize how you prefer

to proceed.

In my own situation, while my bmi is borderline on 60, Dr Pomp

thinks, because I'm tall (6'0 " ) and my abdomen is longer than most,

he can probably get away with doing everything lap all at the same

time. But I want to make sure he is very clear at the beginning,

that my preference is to have it done Open, rather than split into 2

separate procedures.

This just seems right for me. The 2 step process may (and DOES) make

more sense to others. Find out if your surgeon will perform your

procedure in one step if it can be done Open and then compare your

options. Just make sure you are comfortable with your own procedure

before you make this commitment.
