Guest guest
Hello, Because of GERDS, I cannot have dairy products, although I don't know if this includes home made yogurt. All I know is that it is very difficult to digest. I had started making nut yogurt but this too is very hard to digest, even with the help of enzymes. I cannot find legal acidophilus where I live. Any ideas? Thanks, GERDS and chronic C. SCD 17 mths
Guest guest
-Ask your doctor, but I don't see why SCD yogurt would be a problem with GERDS. The best way to find out is to try it and see- as long as it's OK with your doctor. It would be best to try it in the morning, so you are not sleeping (lying down so it does not back up in your esophagus )while it is digesting. You don't need a lot of it for the bacterial benefits. If you don't tolerate yogurt, there are legal probiotics you can get. I use GI prohealth for their products. Guest guest
I can't eat yogurt or cheese (casein sensitivity) so I need to use SCD-legal probiotics. There are several good sources available by mail-order/online -- I can't find any legal forms in my local stores either. I use Kirkman Labs L. acidophilus most of the time: http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/ViewProductDetails@Product_ID@182@Product_Group_ID@... You can also get legal L. Acidophilus from GIProHealth (SCDophilus) http://www.giprohealth.com/scdophilusnext.aspx and Custom Probiotics also has a single strain of L. Acidophilus available http://www.customprobiotics.com/custom-probiotics-l-acidophilus.htm (sometimes you have to insist on only the one strain if you talk to the business owner; he likes to give you a blend of multiple strains, which we don't want). Lucy's Kitchen Shop also offers a Lyosan L. Acidophilus, but it is dairy-based. I gave it a try when I started SCD but couldn't tolerate it, so you might want to try the others instead of this one. Guest guest
Kim and - can you chime in on your successes and challenges at the one year mark of SCD? Just a little over a year and still on limited foods. Guest guest
Hi Aiazeen, I hope I don't discourage you, but after 17 months on SCD, I am still very much limited in what I can eat. Because of GERDS, there are many legal SCD foods that I have to avoid. Because of candida, I have to avoid fruit, nuts... My intestines are damaged so they don't process fat. I just can't digest the tinyest amount of good fat, like coconut oil, olive oil, or butter. I still have chronic C. I have to take miralax and magnesium regularly for this and still... However, I have more energy and feel better. I keep fine tuning my diet, almost daily. I have incorporated enzymes (Bromelain which is pineapple enzymes) to help me digest protein. I take s. boullardi for the candida and will start dairy yogurt again, this time with enzymes. Nut yogurt is too hard to digest and aggravates C. So for a long while now, my diet has been cooked vegetables, hard boiled eggs (fried 1/week), a little fruit and nuts (which I have to reduce again) and fish. Let me know if you have any questions. Guest guest
I should think you could. I order yarns from Canada all the time [grin]. Not much additional expense due to customs, I mean.... Not sure if there is a Canadian source. Have you checked out the links at http://uclbs.org/ ? There might be something helpful there. Guest guest
Hi . I think there are two issues here, one is the low hydrochloric acid one, the other is problems with dairy. In my case, I have both. I'm not about to try even the yoghurt yet (two months into SCD) because of a lifelong dairy allergy though I hope maybe next year I can. So I am taking acidophilus and that seems to be fine for now. I also produce little to no hydrochloric acid, so when I eat a meal with animal protein, I take a couple of HCl capsules. This works for me. Thanks PJ. I have tried yogurt but not with digestive enzymes. My GERDS problem is that my stomach doesn't produce enough hydrochloric acid to digest properly. Thanks for the tip about taking it in the morning. I'll do that ) Take care,

Guest guest
I thought of something else to mention. My meds have had illegals in them since day 1, but I've never eaten any illegal foods. I eat a lot of yogurt, 2 cups a day minimum. I take a lot of supplements too, and fish oil, and sometimes use digestive enzymes. My calories mainly come from fat. A typical day is 53% fat, 30% carbs, and 13% protein (I don't eat much meat).
