Hi All!

I just wanted to update everyone here that I had my surgery on the

28th and everything went really well. I was scheduled at 1pm and

walked into the OR at 2. The nurses that prepped me were very

engaging and entertaining so it kept me from being nervous. In fact,

I was surprised I wasn't more nervous. When I was weighed I came in

12 lbs under goal. Total of 48 lbs lost. 290. I had told Dr Baggs I

wanted to lose 50 to insure a good surgery and lap procedure. He

actually remembered that and commented on it! He is so awesome!

Dr Baggs was particularly pleased with his work and with the

pictures he took of me. I think he was a bit crushed that I hadn't

looked at them yet, he kept asking me every time he saw me. lol I am

not into gore and well...I still haven't gotten the nerve to see

them now that I am home. My poor husband did look and he was sorry.

He is really squimish when it comes to things like that.

The only thing that I fell into a problem with was the JELLO. It had

SUGAR in it! I have never felt such pain in my life. I was on my

second nibble of it and I knew something was wrong. The burning that

went down my throat into my new pouch, oh it was awful. I had

already been dischared to go home too, it was about 1pm when I had

this stupid stuff. I was still nauseous though and I took pain

medicine that I had a super hard time keeping down. I did it though.

By 8 pm that night I was in such agony the nurse on duty called Dr

Baggs who was in surgery at the time asking him what to do? Well she

came back and gave me a shot of morphine. That didn't even take the

edge off. Next time she came in with another stronger dose. This

time it took the fire away, but not the pain, then the fire came

back. So again she was on the phone with Dr Baggs. This time she

comes in and gives me vicodin and I was out like a light. But it was

weird. I wasn't asleep but my eyes were shut, I was running in the

head a million miles a minute. I couldn't get my head to relax to

fall asleep. I was finally out of it around 10pm and slept until 3

am. I woke up pain free and bright eyed and bushy tailed.

The nurse on duty then said a couple weeks earlier she had the same

thing happen to one of her patients and the kitchen messes up, so

she just throws the jello off the tray so that her patients can't

get a chance to eat the stuff. I wish she had been with me the day

before. So don't eat the jello in the hospital!

Anyway, I started to get that burning feeling again and she said

that ment I was hungry. ??? I had no idea I would feel that to be

hungry? So I sipped my applejuice mixture and felt good after a few

mintues. I walked a bunch of times and by the time Dr Baggs saw me

that day I was good to go home again. I ate some broth and tea and

more apple juice then was sent packing.

The car ride home was kinda painful, but once I was in my own

bed...that felt so wonderful. I took a nice nap then went for a

walk. Had a popsicle and OH MY was that ever good! Slept and walked

and now today I am going to start my vites and take a walk here.

I feel 100% better though and my top insision I am a little sore

still. I was able to sleep flat on my back though by this am and I

think tonight I will try sleeping in my favorite position my side.

Only thing that is painful now is the build up and release of gas. I

wish there was something to take for that!

Tomorrow I start my stage II foods, and I am looking forward to

that, since I haven't had any problems on stage one aside from the

jello incident.

The stay at the hospital was really nice and I had my own room. All

the nurses and such that kept coming in and out were really nice.

Only thing I would do different is make sure all the nurses knew the

signs of a recoverying bariatric patient. I didn't realize everyone

wasn't trained for that until this last nurse I had. She mentioned

that the surgery floor was for all types of surgery so if you have

particular questions about your recovery to ask specifically if

there is a bariatric nurse on the floor. Other than that, it all

went well and I couldn't ask for better care. Just stay away from

the jello and all you pre-ops will do just fine!

That is all for now. I must go get started on my routine for the

day!

Sandi...i was on the GBS floor, and they brought me a tray pretty quick with the jello, broth, tea and juice. i never went through the ice chip phase...it wasn't until the night nurse came that I got ice chips. Bizarre...

Hey, SUGAR FREE jello should be OK, shouldn't it? I bet they gave you the regular kind. When I had my surgery, they didn't put me on the GBS floor, they put me on the cardiac floor (they were monitoring my ticker). Those nurses didn't know I was only supposed to have ice chips the first day, and they gave me ice water. I sipped that slowly but it didn't feel right. It wasn't until the next day that they gave me ice chips. That's what we get when the staff isn't fully familiar with the gastric bypass surgery protocols! I have to warn you that I'm not sure that Fremont does sugar free

either. I had both jello and pudding while there, and neither tasted

particularly sugar free, but I didn't get sick as I don't dump on

sugar. LaWanda At 04:34 PM 7/1/05, you wrote:

The thing that tasted the best to me was the herbal tea. The broth was

SUPER salty, but it was warm and went down good.

Just do lots of walking and you will feel better that much faster.

No problem Laurie! If you need any other questions answered I will

try to do my best! Thanks for asking how I am doing!

I just went on a 20 minute walk to the end of my cross street and I

feel great. I only have a slight pulling feeling in the torso area

now. Whew! It is amazing to feel this good so soon after getting

your innards rearranged.

I was concerned I might not have been babying myself enough. I tend

to hit the ground running....

Stage II foods so far are being well tolerated. I am on day 2! I

really like the cream of wheat with applesauce combo. Yum.

I was having a hard time adjusting my time table to get in all my

nutrient pills. I finally figured out a good schedule, so if you

need help with that later, let me know and I can send it to you. I

just put little check marks after I complete each thing, even the

fluid intake. It was so hard to remember when I took something that

this is full proof for me now!

I can't wait for you to have this feeling of accomplishment too! You

are going to do great! You go girl!
