Tomorrow I head, with my husband, for Las Vegas. There I will meet many

old friends and probably make some new ones, as there is a convention of

about two thousand blind people who will gather for the next week, some

there already but most arriving tomorrow. I just can't wait to go, and I

really look forward to some of the things I'll do and people I will see,

but only with one part of me.

I came to know " the jewel of the desert " , as some would call it, in the

late sixties as a young adult. My mother and stepfather moved there in

1967, and remained there until my mother died of throat cancer, in

1985. Throughout those years, I would go to see them, and of course would

visit the casinos. There were six of us sibs, and we all gambled to a

greater or lesser extent, some of us even going too far with it, though

thankfully I was never one who did. My sister, who is now dead from

her obesity, lost so much money that there were a couple of places who

would comp her anything. In 1994, another sister went there, with

and her friend, and all of their rooms, food and everything else, were

comped at the Excalibir. We, Dan and I, were staying at the Aladdin, for

business reasons, or she would have gotten us comped as well. I did go to

a couple of feasts over there, with them, that were totally free, except

for the tip. I always think of Las Vegas as 's city, and really of

our longest term family place, and going there without them all there is

always hard for me. I will be staying at the Riviera, where Mom was

working when she got the cancer that killed her. Please everyone, help me

to pray for the strength not to eat to comfort myself. Thank God, and

Doctor Dutta, for the new tool that I have to help me physically. LaWanda

Dear, LaWanda--enjoy your trip. I'm sure you can keep your mouth

busy talking to all your good friends there (and not eating the wrong

stuff). Walk around with your friends alot too, if you can. Also,

many hotel have workout rooms, maybe you can use the equipment for

your your exercise.

See you when you get back!
