Guest guest
Dear Anita, I take Dairy Care every a.m. I open 2 capsules and add it to a little vanilla yogurt. It has no taste and has done wonders for me. I too was concerned about the " enteric coating " . Jane J. BMI 42 and Shrinking Post-Op Lap BPD/DS April 26, 2001 Dr. Ren NYU Medical Center, NYC www.thinforlife.org > Okay, > > I also have another question. Right now I'm taking DairyCare for my lactose intolerance and it's doing wonders (acidophillus + lactase in it). The only problem is that it's enteric coated and some people have said that we have problems dissolving enteric coatings after WLS. The other acidophillus supplements I've seen have lactOSE in them, not lactase. I don't know why I'd want the thing I'm having trouble absorbing (lactose) instead of the enzyme that helps me absorb it (lactase), but so far only DairyCare has the Acidophillus and lactase. If the enteric coating is not a problem, I'll stick with DairyCare, but otherwise what's a good acidophillis supplement that doesn't contain milk or lactose ? > > Thanks > > Anita > Pre-pre-op in Denver
Guest guest
Anita; The enteric coating on the Dairy Care also has me concerned. I find Dairy Care to be the ONLY one that helps me. Forget about Lactaid. No matter how many of those I take, they STILL do nothing for me. Bummer, because dairy foods are my single favorite food group ;-} At least there is Lactaid Milk which has all the lactose removed (if you get Lactaid 100). I predict that eventually manufacterers will see the value of offering more dairy foods without lactose and we'll see it in cheeses and yougurts. But in the meantime, we have Dairy Care! I first found out about Dairy Care from some people on another list and they were all post-ops who were using it. That suggest that maybe they were able to use the enteric. Second, you can break open the capsules and mix the powder in a drink if the enteric just doesn't work for you. I've been meaning to contact the company and ask about this. I could have sworn that the first time I ordered the pills they were NOT enteric coated. They either use both (I ordered different size packages this time than the first time), may have switched, or else my memory is just bad (which I KNOW it to be '-} ) The company that makes them is STILL a small independent company. Maybe if they get letters from lots of WLS patients, they'll remedy the situation. It would be better to try to get them to change now than waiting till they're bought up by some huge food or drug conglomerate. Go to daircare.com and click on their 'contact us'. hugs, gobo > Okay, > > I also have another question. Guest guest
My wife takes acidophilus on a regular basis. The brand she buys is a gel cap and is not enteric coated. It's a good idea to get that type if you can. But if you have a large supply of enteric coated pills I'd recommend splitting them to expose the inside. If they are football shaped I'd suggest splitting them longways if you can. Regards. Guest guest
Dear Anita: I take DairyCare and it works great and I have been taking it for a good while and have no plans to stop so I wouldn't worry about it especially as it seems to be working for you already. Guest guest
Joe, Does Joy's have lactase or lactose in it ? I'm probably going to stick with Dairy Care and open them since they're working great for me, but if there's another one out there with acidophilus and lactase that's in a capsule I can just swallow, that would be an option as well. I haven't found anything comparable yet. Anita Pre-pre-op in Denver > > > Okay, > > > > > > I also have another question. Guest guest
Sunrider International makes a great acidophilus supplement. It is called " Vitadophilus " and comes 10 to a box. The acidophilus is encased in a pectin solution so that it will be digested in the intestines rather than being dissolved by acid in the stomach. I eat it plain from the package, but you can mix it into a smoothie or whatnot. It tastes like apple powder is the best way I can explain it. Sunrider isn't available in too many stores...go to their website for more info: www.sunriderinternational.com Hope this helps. Best wishes, :0)
Guest guest
I have a capsuled Acidophilus product made by Sundown (Sundowner?) vitamin co. that contains both acidophilus and Lactase. I found it at Wal-Mart (go figure). Hugs, Liane > > > > Okay, > > > > > > > > I also have another question. Guest guest
Liane, Cool, I'll have to check it out. I think that's what makes DairyCare so effective. The combination of acidophilus and lactase. It would be nice if I could just get it at the store instead of waiting for it to be shipped thanks *hugs* Anita > > > > > Okay, > > > > > > > > > > I also have another question. Guest guest
Dear Nan E: You have to be careful about opening capsules as some were not meant to be taken that way and can cause stomach problems. I am sure as I asked my doc that it is okay to take the Dairy Care that way but do please be careful and check before taking anything that way without checking. FYI did you all know that the normal Ferrous Sulfate tablets, (the red iron pills) are not water soluble but fat soluble? I didn't until I asked Dr. A about my PCP giving me a script for them because my last bloodwork showed I am anemic, Who knew?? Also just as a point of interest I was also talking to my nutritionist told me that even though spinach, (I love spinach) is very high in iron we absorb almost none of it as it has some kind of binder on the iron and isn't absorbed in any ones system. Guest guest
Anita.... At about 2 months post-op I decided to be brave and had a glass of milk. The next several hours I felt like I had a rock in my abdomen and decided to try some Dairy Care just to see what happened. Within a short time I felt much better and the rock feeling was gone. I've taken Dairy Care every day since and have no problems at all with milk products...and I consume quite a bit of milk and cheese in my diet. I don't open the capsules (swallow them whole instead) and they work just fine. In fact, I put one in a glass of water as an experiment and it dissolved pretty quickly. Lots of post-ops take Dairy Care and have no problem with the enteric coating on this particular pill. I used to take two capsules a day but dropped down to one and that is working just fine. As far as my experience shows you won't need to change from Dairy Care after your DS, it will work just fine. ===== H Dr. Keshishian 11-21-00 __________________________________________________
