Guest guest
It really depends on the style of acupuncture.. Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese are they using Moxa/heating? There is also personal style and today there are Western points. More in the hands? More in the ears? Points on the bottom of the foot OMG hurt! Some acu's use more needles, some use less needles. Certain points can be very sensitive and the turning of the needle to increase/reduce or stimulate Chi can be sensitive. Sometimes if the needles hurt after the appt the acupuncturist might of hit a nerve (this is rare).. Other times it can feel like a deep bruise due to the needle being deep from twisting. In general though, no the points should not hurt after the treatment. I have found that in my experience Western docs (American's) that practice acupuncture like the Chinese Torture feeling, meaning they usually have a style that involves some discomfort POST treatment. Sometimes my abdomen feels a bit sore after the acu and a deep I feel bruising like feeling. I attribute this to being extra sensitive in my abdominal area. It is super important to communicate this to your acu. If this is something that is a concern that you don't feel you can work through it may mean that that specific acu's style does not suit you. Sometimes acu's can change their MO but in general if you feel a lot of stress during the appt (I had an acu that was so painful I was like a ball of tension during treatments that I came to the conclusion one day the stress is really outweighing the benefit.) Guest guest
I think the more it hurts though, the more you needed it! No, I don't think so, not normally. But I guess it depends on what you mean by " hurts " . Most locations I hardly even notice the needles going in. Once in awhile I do. My acupuncturist always asks " Is this OK? " after she inserts a needle, and I went for about a year before I ever said " No " . An occasional one does hurt a bit but it usually calms down after 20 seconds or so. The really occasional one that really hurts I have her take out and put in a different place. One good thing about acupuncture is that there are many locations that can be used for the same treatment so we shouldn't have to suffer. Now, there is one spot on my wrist insides that is an absolute screamy button for me. Instant tears running down my cheeks. So, we never use that one! I have had some occasions, especially at first, when things didn't hurt but I felt something, like energy maybe, pulsing between two needles in different parts of hte body. She says this is good. But like I say, this doesn't hurt, it's just sort of interesting.

Guest guest
Eileen, No.. it does not work this way that if it hurts you need it more. Some places are just super sensitive. Also understand that there are meridians going through your whole body.. so like the bottom of the feet have major kidney meridians and boy are those uncomfortable going in for me. I am kidney yang deficient. Both my alternative doc and acu say my problems stem from weak kidney energy (remember we are talking about energy flow here, right?) Sometimes a place can be sore- but this does not mean you need it more. Again, it depends on the style of acupuncture and since I presume you go to a Westerner (in general) they are more into having the patient feel the pain- this is just a modality within acupuncture. Guest guest
The only time I had pain or bruising with acupuncture was when I suggested that he use the needles closer to the area that was bothering me (elbow tendonitis); when he did it his regular way it never really hurt -- I should have trusted him more!
