Guest guest
SCD worked so fast and well for me I just dropped the Asacol the first week. I was on prednisone at the time so I had to wean off of that. My gastros all said diet had nothing to do with my illness and I should eat a low residue diet, potatoes and pasta if I wanted a specific diet so I dropped them. I see my GP regularly and he wasn't a fan of the diet either but since seeing me regularly and seeing my improvement he just says "keep on doing what you're doing". He's also started to agree with my vitamin tests and prescribe supplements, so he's now a fan of the diet. I haven't had to see a gastro in over a year because I've had no symptoms since starting SCD. I will see them this year though to schedule a colonoscopy. Guest guest
My story is similar. The gastro who dx’d me in 2001 said diet had nothing to do with how I felt. When I asked him what I could eat he said “whatever doesn’t bother you”. Well, everything bothered me (I won’t go into the gory details – you all know). Three years later this doc dumped all of his HMO patients (including me). It was at this time I found the SCD which literally saved my life. After a few months on the SCD (and hugely improved symptoms) I went back to this doc 1 more time, to let him know about the SCD and to give him a copy of BTVC (I was pissed that I had to spend $50.00 for this office visit to educate this gastro). I implored him to tell all of his IBD patients about the SCD. During that last visit I informed him that I stopped taking the 16 pills of Pentasa/day and was weaning myself off of prednisone. His jaw dropped to the floor. I haven’t seen him since. You will have to make your own decisions about whether or not to continue taking the drugs your doc prescribes. For me personally, I was concerned about long term steroid use (prednisone), and when I read the fine print about Pentasa and found out that only 30% is absorbed (is that with a functioning gut or an impaired one?) I quit taking them for a week and then resumed taking them with no difference in symptoms. So I stopped taking them. The next gastro I had was just as uninformed about diet – only wanted to prescribe drugs. Ugh. I also gave him a copy of BTVC and implored him to tell his IBD patients about the SCD. After I had to resign my job (and along with it my healthcare insurance) because I couldn’t do the physical work anymore, I took my health care into my own hands and have recovered very nicely from Crohn’s thanks to the SCD. Now, if I could only afford the $3,000.00 colonoscopy that my new doc wants me to have, I’m sure that it would prove that I am in remission. Guest guest
My original GI wanted me on predisone. I was already taking 8 Pentasa & 3 Entocort per day. My goal was to NOT take ANY meds and just do the diet. GI was not a fan at all. I got a new GI. The new GI supported the diet, when I brought up about getting off the meds completely, he encouraged me to do so if I felt I better. He suggested reducing my med intake by 1 pill each week which I have been doing and am down to 2 Pentasa per day and I feel good. Guest guest
My family's story seems to be a little (lot?!) different in that my dd's dr's (at the world-renowned Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA) were very supportive of the diet. The worst reaction we got was " if you want to try it, it's fine by me " and the best (the dr. we switched her care to) was: " It's a great diet. I try to get all my IBD patients to try it. That's why I have the lowest rate of readmission for GI's at this hospital! " So our dr. was onboard with it all. We got dd off meds VERY slowly. ly, I was not aiming for her to be off all meds. I was happy that we would hopefully be able to avoid TNF drugs (Remicade) and surgery. We weaned off the prednisone very slowly, and also of Prilosec and Flagyl and iron (not legal). Her labs were good. Took her 2 1/2 years until she got off the Imuran, and now she's been med-free for one entire year. We haven't seen the GI doc in 18 months, but she's going next month. Good luck, Ellen 12 y/o dd scd since 5/06 for Crohn's med-free for one year
Good luck, Ellen 12 y/o dd scd since 5/06 for Crohn's med-free for one year
Guest guest
Ellen: The timing of your post is excellent. Just visited my dd's dr today and your post is a reminder that this all takes time and meds are reduced and removed gradually. I have to keep reminding my self that patience is so important. I also believe that what we think and believe will happen most often comes true and I hope, think and believe my dd's progress will follow yours. So grateful to be able to read these posts and learn from those who have traveled this road before and offer glimmers of hope daughter 17, CD 6/09 SCD 9/09 > > My family's story seems to be a little (lot?!) different in that my dd's dr's (at the world-renowned Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA) were very supportive of the diet.
