Wow! Now I see why they would not quote me a price. The girl was

probably too embarrassed to tell me.

Ok here is another question. I got a quote of $30,000 from Dr.

Rabkins office and the hospital he works out of, but they said that

was for three days. Anything over three days would be extra. I had

the understanding that the average hospital stay for the open DS is

about 5 days. I would like to hear from some of you as too how long

you were in the hospital.

Thanks,

Shirley

I self payed with Dr. Rabkin while I waited for insurance approval. I

had a package " deal " of $18,000 for 3 days and then 80% of anything

over that. I ended up staying 4 days even though I was laproscopic

and the cost for the extra day? $9,000! I was shocked and thankful

that I was finally approved and it was covered by insurance.

The reason Dr. Rabkin's office quoted for three days is because he does

most of his operations laparascopically. However, I happened to have

mine open because of my gynecologist having to remove a giant ovarian

cyst first before Rabkin and Jossart did their surgery. I was in the

hospital for 7 days. But I also had a problem with " third-spacing " and

had to stay until my kidneys behaved themselves.

I was admitted and had my operation on a Monday. I went home on

Thursday. The hospital and insurance considers this a 3 day stay. It

is common practice not to count the day you go home. My Insurance

had pre-approved me for a 4 day stay...So I could have stayed until

Friday if I had wanted to. My Dr. gave me the option to stay one

more day, I chose to go home.

Third-spacing is where fluid is " leaking " out of your veins into your

tissues which, for whatever reason, are a little dry. They increased

the amount of fluid I was getting through the IV and eventually gave me

Lasix. When they did that my kidneys worked overtime and I outputted

several liters in just a few hours. My doctor said it was in response

to the stress of surgery. I was under anesthesia for 5 and a half hours

and had a large, basketball sized ovarian tumor and my ovaries removed

at the same time as my WLS.
