Guest guest
My kids also eat Stretch Island, though only Grape and Raspberry, and they seem to tolerate them fine. They eat more than one a week, probably more like 5 or 6 a week and the occasional day when Daddy is in charge while Mommy is garage sale shopping and they have 3 in one day per kid, plus at least 4 bananas each and an entire batch of muffins. Needless to say there was some fancy pooping going on in my house that night and the next day. Notably though...no stomachaches! I was surprised but it just made their stools loose and stinkier, but nothing like pre-SCD, purely amateur stuff. We have never tried Fruitabu since I had never heard that it was okay and I was concerned about the ripeness of the flattened bananas. We have gotten the Just Peaches and Just Apricots and in small quantities they seem to be okay for the younger boys but not my oldest, I think it gave him stomachaches. The baby loves the Just peaches and gobbled them up. I worry that they eat too much fruit leather, since it is advanced but frankly, it is the only advanced thing they eat. Other than that they are stage 3 and really pretty basic considering that...they only eat 4 or 5 vegetables and about 5 fruits right now. SIFL is our go to for a candy-like, special item and I am loath to give it up so I keep an eye out for issues that I can link to it and until then we march on, sticky and smiling! When there is any kind of die off or regression it is the first thing I halt and the last thing I add back. What about the TJ's dehydrated fruit? Is it just the fruit, like the Just.... products? I bet it is cheaper!! Chrissy Subject: Re: Fruit leathersTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009, 9:55 PM I can tolerate Stretch Island Fruit Leather and Fruitabu (the organic version of SIFL). Guest guest
My only concern with the fruit leathers is the high incidence of cavities with the sticky, sweet stuff. When I counsel patients for caries ( cavity) reduction, fruit leather is a no-no. So please be aware of this and limit this as you see fit. Terry My kids also eat Stretch Island, though only Grape and Raspberry, and they seem to tolerate them fine. Guest guest
Yeah, I cringe reading that b/c I am well aware. I am between a rock and hard place. We have a 7 year old and 3 year old here that have friends over all the time and are in school and whatever and they eat NOTHING like anything their friends have incl. all manner of candy, cake, cookie, ice cream, pizza, sandwich, cracker, chip...so on and they are ANGELS about it. They never ask me if they can have those things, they never complain, they never throw a fit...nothing. Consequently I want to give them some manner of treat that is special and yummy. I fear for Elijah's sealants every day!! Now that you bring up teeth....Elijah's front teeth have turned an odd color since starting SCD. I supplement him with calcium since we can't do cheese or yogurt yet...what could be causing this? I need to contact his DAN! about it. Thanks, Chrissy Subject: Re: Re: Fruit leathersTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009, 11:27 PM My only concern with the fruit leathers is the high incidence of cavities with the sticky, sweet stuff. Guest guest
Chrissy, So, I totally understand the treat mentality, I have two 10 yr olds--but, perhaps it should be just that, a treat, for occasional use and a learning opportunity for your kids to know that it can cause cavities and has to be limited and teeth should be brushed after the leather. The sealants will help! How old is Elijah? Are the front teeth permanent or baby teeth? And, what color have they turned? Has he fallen and hit his teeth or gotten banged in the face by any siblings? If it helps any, my kids brag to their friends when they come over that they "need to try my mom's yogurt, it's better than the store!" and you will find as your kids progress that you can make some pretty awesome treats that will put to shame what their friend's are eating. My kids weren't exposed to any sugar until they got into the school system, if you can believe it. They were given Fruit Loops in pre-school to learn how to count, and then encouraged to eat them. I was horrified. Every year it has been a battle and I get disbelief from the teachers, then a dismissive, 'oh it's 'cause you're a dentist' which I really resent, because I'm a Mom first. The teachers in our school system have used sweets as a reward in each grade and the endless birthday celebrations with cupcakes, ice cream , etc. really get my goat. Not to mention that somehow, every holiday is celebrated in school with a party and sweets. I read your posts and I know you are doing a great job--I just wanted you to be aware of it. Guest guest
Terry, His front teeth on top are still baby teeth and they are the most affected. The bottom front teeth are permanent and they are still okay. He is 7. I agree about limiting the fruit leather, I will be more judicious with them from now on. Thanks for the kick in the butt...lol. He hasn't hit them to my knowledge. They are looking kind of transparent in some parts and are kind of grayish. We need to get to the dentist to get it checked out pronto. Guest guest
Thanks, Terry...but don't I need to worry about what is causing the weirdness? My brother and father both had all their teeth pulled prior to turning 20 b/c of lacking sufficient enamel and their teeth rotted out. YUCK. So far it appears that his baby teeth have sufficient enamel, but with one inherited dental issue in my family (and Elijah is their physical clone ) couldn't there be others just waiting to pop up?? GRR. He also has two teeth fused together with a chunk that kind of juts out from the back...hard to describe. That is just due to his genetic skeletal anomalies issue. Poor baby, so much stuff to deal with and he is such a sweetie. Thanks, again Terry. When I counsel patients for caries ( cavity) reduction, fruit leather is a no-no. So please be aware of this and limit this as you see fit. Terry My kids also eat Stretch Island, though only Grape and Raspberry, and they seem to tolerate them fine. They eat more than one a week, probably more like 5 or 6 a week and the occasional day when Daddy is in charge while Mommy is garage sale shopping and they have 3 in one day per kid, plus at least 4 bananas each and an entire batch of muffins. Guest guest
Hi Chrissy, I'm not sure because I don't know your Dad or bro, but it sounds like they had amelogenesis imperfecta. It can be inherited via either a dominant OR a recessive gene. It is good news that Elijah's baby teeth look OK, and yes, you and the Dentist will have to watch his adult teeth closely, but they would appear pitted, discolored, misshapen and would look abnormal to you. It sounds like his two lower front teeth came in well and look normal? I'm sure you have advised his dentist of the genetic tooth problems? I wouldn't worry too much about the gray translucency, but, by all means, have it checked out at your convenience.
