New to diet

Hi, I am new here. My husband was dx'd with colitis. He did a cleanse about 2 months ago, and hasn't been the same since. We have since found that most of the herbs in the cleanse are illegals on the diet. We are looking at this as a challenge and a need to change our dietary habits. We ate healthy, but way too many carbs. I am so thankful for this forum. The dr. he went to has never heard of this diet. Too bad. I hope to bring him a good report in the future. Fortunately, we have a friend whose wife has been on it for 10 yrs. and at her last colonoscopy (she had Crohn's), the dr. said she was misdiagnosed because there were no scars. He couldn't believe she ever had CD. So, we are looking forward to my husband getting better and being able to carry on with his life.

I don't know Marilyn, but my prayers are with her. What a blessing that she is able to spend this time with her mom.

My question is where do I buy the nut flours, and if your local store does not carry DCCC, is there any other way to get it? Would the Friendly dairy ship it, can you make it?

My husband is on the second day of the intro diet, and felling better already. He is on meds, though (Asacol and prednisone). How does one go about getting off them? Maybe it's too soon to ask.

Blessings to all,

Welcome ,

There are several choices for nut flours:

Lucy’s Kitchen Shop www.scdkitchen.com

You have to call to order (toll free) (Washington state)

Digestive Wellness www.DigestiveWellness.com (located in

NY)

Honeyville Food Products www.HoneyvilleGrain.com

(located in Utah)

These are 3 companies that I have purchased from. They all carry

blanched, finely ground almond flour. You definitely want blanched almond flour

(skins removed). Digestive Wellness & Honeyville Grain often have sales.

If nut flours are difficult for your DH to digest then it is

recommended to start out with nut butters first as they are more easily

digested. Nut butter can be substituted for almond flour in most recipes. Have

you looked at stages of food introduction at www.PecanBread.com?

I make my own DCCC by dripping the 24 hour yogurt (I make my

yogurt with half & half – make sure there are no other ingredients in

the milk, half & half or cream you use to make yogurt, like carageenan).

Others on this list purchase DCCC but I don’t know from

where. Perhaps they can chime in.

I cannot advise about the meds.

Hi and welcome to SCD. I still think of myself as new to the diet, but

it's been 6 months (yay) and I am so grateful for my improvement on it.

My best advice is to stick to this fanatically and move slowly. The stages on

pecanbread.com are a good guide to what foods to start with and how to progress.

I look forward to the day when I can toss my meds out the window! Elaine, the

author of BTVC did not advise stopping medication. Some individuals have made

that decision, usually against their doctor's advice. It is a personal decision.

From what I have read, some people have successfully done this after being

symptom-free for some time, and they usually wean themselves off slowly. But the

diet can be done with medication too.

For now, the goal is for your husband to heal, and this takes time. I also hope

he gets to the point where symptoms are a remote memory!
