Guest guest
Dear Beckie, I think you handled it just fine. I'd be willing to bet that most of us here heard about and researched the RNY first, and our dissatisfaction with the limitations of the RNY prompted us to investigate further when the DS was mentioned. I myself was trying to talk myself into an RNY, when I ran across a site that discussed banding. Trying to research that, I then heard about the Fobi pouch. Finally, I heard whispers of the DS. And here I am. I'm so glad I had to wait for my insurance to kick in, otherwise, I might not have learned about the other options until it was too late. I don't think anyone could or should object to you asking questions at a meeting whose purpose is for prospective patients to ask questions. If a few of the RNY'ers want to know more about DS, what's the harm in them learning about it? You may be saving them from a revision down the road. Besides, they can still get the DS from Dr. s clinic, just not from her partners, they'll have to line up for Dr. P. Keep up the good work,
Guest guest
I don't think it's too pushy. What if someone had the chance to stop you from making that mistake if the situation were reversed, but didn't do it because they didn't want to seem pushy? I think it's important enough to be assertive about, if not pushy. -Sherry (Lake Marcel, WA) BPD/DS Feb. 2, 2001 self-pay 5'5 " / 338 pounds / 33 years old Lost 9 pounds in pre-op weight loss efforts Have lost 73 pounds since surgery! I think it's important enough to be assertive about, if not pushy. I started a support group in Bellingham and am the only person so far that has chosen this procedure. I expressed to the group that knowledge is power. While I never try to talk anyone in to anything, I do strongly believe that they need to be aware of all the different WLS so they make the correct choice for their lifestyle, needs and comfort. I don't think anyone has the right to push the next. I will say that no one so far has known about my procedure and I've actually begun making up a small info packet that explains the differences and gives web sites and dr names if anyone is researching. ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 58 NW Washington Medical DR Heap, Richmond WA Working on 1st appeal

Most people don't understand fully about the Rny and certainly they are clueless about the DS. For the ones that were very interested I would give web sites and told them to reasearch. What I did was make some business size cards with a diagram of the DS and some web sites, my Doctors name address and phone#. That way I could carry them in my purse and give them to people who wanted more info. To answer your question above: No I don't think it would be " pushy " to have a small handout to give to people who approach you. After all they are coming to YOU for more information. You also have the " right " to ask your questions or have them qualify thier statements at the meeting in regards to the DS. It's not surprising that doing so will spark and intrest in DS.
