Now I'm confused. I know we are not supposed to use commercial products,

however, I thought there were some that are legal for beginners- ie, Welchs

grape juice, Dole pineapple in its own juice, etc. Are you referring to foods

that are not on this list?

Thanks,

Thanks Jodi,

I did not use any commercial products in the beginning- it was too scary. I did

try the Dole pineapple recently and seem to do fine with it. I think we all need

to individualize SCD to some extent within legal limits, but I need to be sure

I'm not sabotaging the diet by eating Dole's pineapple. I read labels carefully,

and the one I have says " Pineapple Chunks in 100% Pineapple Juice " with citric

acid as the only additive listed.

I agree with setting up this project as labels change and new products are going

to be marketed. Whatever we can find to make life easier is worth it. I still

prefer to make my own, but we all have time constraints, or want to travel and

it's nice to have an alternative.

SCD has been a life saver for me, and I would not want to risk it in any way. I

did go to a conference and brought a legal Lara Bar in my purse, and tolerated

it just fine. I know this does not mean I can eat a whole box at one sitting, or

even one every day yet, but just having that to get me through the coffee break

and inconspicuously away from the illegal donuts everyone else was having, was

a huge convenience for me.

Thanks foe everyone's help on this board.

We are not supposed to use commercial products. We are supposed to make

our own.

However, places such as Digestive Wellness carry commercial products

which they say they have vetted as being SCD-legal.

Other people report from time to time that they have used X, or Y, or Z,

without difficulty. But there are no physical letters from the company,

following the parameters Elaine set up for gaining approval of a product

for personal use.

Still other people have reported what appear to be manufacturing changes

in the vetted lists for beginners, and we have no procedure in place for

gaining re-certification. (Just ask anyone who's been associated with

kosher certification how on their toes the rabbis involved have to be!)

I'm hoping to assemble a list for long-term SCDers to discuss some of the

issues which face the SCD community, in order to keep this vital diet

alive and current, while remaining true to the parameters which Elaine

Gottschall bequeathed us.

I think I get this now. As a newbie- I memorized all the rules-not wanting to

make a mistake. I still make mostly all my own, however, I do use canned tuna

and salmon ( with nothing else added) and have emergency Dole pineapple for when

I don't get to the store for fruit. I'm pretty paranoid about using anything in

a can as I want to get the best results I can.

What I'm getting from this is that there have been changes- and even the

original list is suspect.

I agree with keeping a running list of " legal " products. I have Penzey's garlic

and onion- since there is a letter.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Please clarify the fruit in it's own juice statement, so I don't mess up.

PJ,

Dole Peaches or Pineapple 'in it's own juice' is legal but not if it says pineapples in 100% pinapple juice.

I have never found peaches 'in their own juice but if you find it, it is legal according to the lists.  I don't recall reading that anyone has actually found it though.

Thanks, mine says 100% juice. I've only eaten it twice with no problems, but, I

will stop.

I don't want to rock the boat- I've been doing so well :) thankfully.

It is confusing deciding what is OK or not, so I'm glad this is being looked at.

I wanted to add... I miss the days when, like in math class, 100% meant 100%

!!!

Saying something is 100% when it is not should be illegal.

Hey PJ-

I made the same choice as you.

And guess what? I am super thankful for it too as I think that is why I healed.

I use no store bought items.

It is nice however getting to a point that if I choose to do something I don't

get sick.

My go to thing that I did decide to use was canned sardines from Vitalchoice

(sustainable, enamel lined cans, wild and have some of the lowest mercury

numbers in the biz)

I was really sick when I first started out and it was just too much for me to

make my own food.. My husband would shop and cook for me when he could but he

works. I really don't know how I did it. Just standing would make me dizzy.

Sometimes when I would flare of have a mini obstruction I would get store bough

apple sauce because I just had nothing to eat and needed something (could not

eat eggs) anyway I would get a lot of D from the apple sauce even though I

called the comapny and everything.

My husband would make my homemade applesauce and I would not get nearly as much

D.

Took me about 3 months of intro for D to completely disappear. Was a nightmare.

But my pain went away almost immediately so that kept me going on the diet.

My sentiments exactly!!

Yes, it is. Which, to be honest, is why, in most cases, it's actually EASIER to make my own stuff. I could spend so much time making sure something was legal, and get so frustrated trying to extract "proprietary secrets" out of companies, that in that time, I could have made whatever it was.— Marilyn
