Guest guest
Hey.. Welcome! I didn't get your name. Why don't you post -exactly- what your son is eating and how much? Did he do the intro diet? What is his diagnosis? How old is he? what's his weight? The rest of the reply is within body of email. > My son and husband and I have been on the SCD since Sunday. I have spent almost ALL my time doing nothing but researching, planning, preparing, and cooking SCD legal foods. We have not cheated, although my husband and I have eaten a couple more " advanced " foods, since we don't have any health problems - we're just doing this with our son for moral support. Our other 3 kids have done a mix of SCD and " normal " (gluten free) foods. I am so sorry it is so challenging!! It sucks. All of us have been there. Your son is really lucky to have parents do all of this for him!! Kudos for the moral support! This is > My son has LOST 6 pounds because we simply cannot find enough food to keep him full and he started HS football practice this week. I finally broke down and made him a smoothie with coconut milk (from a can, but no sugar or guar gum), frozen ripe bananas and frozen strawberries just to get some calories in him. And I made some almond flour pancakes for him too because he needs to eat something. He's only eaten chicken soup, chicken, MORE CHICKEN, carrots cooked to mush, eggs, turkey burger patties (2-3 at a time), canned pears, cooked peaches and Welch's grape juice and some natural apple cider. He's starving! He doesn't have D, but still has some B with slightly loose stools. Most of us loose weight in the first couple of weeks on the diet. It is just the way it goes! Don't stress about this. So there are plenty of ways to get calorie rich foods into your sons diet without using illegal canned coconut milk. I understand your rational as you want your son nourished but in actuality you are nourishing the bad bugs that are keeping your son in the vicious cycle. That is why the SCD should be implemented with fanatical adherence to get him OUT of this horrid vicious cycle. Canned pears are not legal as well. Make sure the turkey patties have no additives in them. Is the juice heavily diluted? Is the cider opaque and not clear? Are you removing the peels and deseeding everything? How are you cooking the soup? Have you guys done the into diet and slowly added foods back in? Down the line you can add bone broth, Ghee, avocado, half and half yogurt (proceed very slowly unless he has a true dairy allergy) There is plenty of nourishment and calorie rich food on the diet!! Don't worry! > I've gone from feeling great, to having D and I'm not the sick one! My husband and I both have headaches and don't feel all that great. I'm used to eating a very healthy diet - gluten, dairy and soy free with lots of fresh vegetables, fruit and meat and homemade baked items. We normally eat very few processed foods. You guys are also experiencing die off!! You'll pull through this. You guys eating yogurt yet? > Is it normal for healthy people to feel sick when starting the SCD? How can I get more calories into my son? Are we doing something wrong? Yep. Happens many times!! It's a shift in ecology. What you guys are going through is like on the micro level! Hang in there.. you guys are gonna get the hang of it! Keep asking questions! Jodi
Guest guest
Congratulations, it sounds like you are all having die off. Fun, isn't it? See, it doesn't matter if you are " sick " because most Americans eat lots of stuff that can hardly be defined as food and it leads to a fine colony of bad stuff in their gut. Even on your former diet you were eating lots of things that could encourage this kind of nastiness. I had no symptoms of GI issues at all but came to SCD with a well-developed sweet tooth. Even though I continued to " cheat " with my daily dose of sweet tea and the occasional bag of chips or fries from Chick Fil A...still, at about 2 weeks I had a major die off and it was miserable...D, headaches, shakes, nausea, a weird disembodied feeling at one point right before I vomited. Good times.... On the bright side, now I feel wonderful, the best I have felt in years. I cook all day and sometimes into the night and have a one year old that still nurses once a night so I don't sleep much but it doesn't matter, I have more energy than I have had in at least ten years and I am in the best mood most days, instead of being borderline grouch monster. Amazing stuff. Now..as for the hunger and calories. The only answer is to eat more legal stuff at the stage you are currently at. A teenage boy will need to take a cooler of snacks everywhere, I would imagine. My 7 year old and 3 year old do and together they don't even weigh 100 lbs!! I am now accustomed to make RIDICULOUS quantities of food everyday. We have 3 sons, 7,3 and 1 and my husband and I and we spend $1000 a month on food minimum and NEVER go out to eat. That is A LOT of chicken and bananas!! Breakfast can be banana pancakes fried in coconut oil...calorie city! Or an entire plate of scrambled eggs, a banana, diluted juice and a bowl of applesauce. These things digest well and so will go through his system easier, plus he has possibly been starving for nutrients for some time so hunger comes quicker and it is often major. Lunch is again about quantity....roasted chicken, carrots roasted with olive oil, salt, pepper and oregano (yum), jello, a hard boiled egg or two (or three ) and juice again. Same for dinner. The amounts he needs to eat are totally different than pre-SCD. It will fade with time, we are not nearly as ravenous as we used to be. It sounds to me like he is progressing well, so no worries there. Soon you will be able to add things of more substance. You might want to be cautious with almond flour..it is often harder to digest than pecan flour and nut butters. Also watch out for the advanced things and borderline illegal stuff, it is really soon to go out on that limb!! A smoothie that is a little gentler and still delicious : frozen banana, frozen peaches, coconut OIL (can be used from day one and packed with fat and calories), dole pineapple juice...very tropical and full of calories. You could get a thermos and fill it up, what a yummy snack! Do you avoid red meat?? My kids found it very satisfying at that stage, particularly with the homemade ketchup. This too shall pass...and until then you will be in the kitchen, I hope it is a nice one. Chrissy mama to 3 boys on SCD 3 months, wonderful progress!! > > My son and husband and I have been on the SCD since Sunday. For breakfast he eats small quantities of eggs (he's been saying for a few months that they upset his stomach), 2-3 cups of chicken soup with mushed carrots and lots of chicken, a can of pears (BTVC says they're legal if packed in their own juice), and some diluted apple or grape juice. Lunch is more chicken soup or 2-3 turkey patties, more pears, juice and maybe a banana. Dinner is ots of grilled chicken or turkey kabobs (ground turkey with pureed onion, garlic, salt and pepper), cooked carrots (one day he had green beans cooked to mush), more pears, more juice. For dessert he's had baked peaches or apples with cinnamon and honey. Snacks are chicken soup, bananas, turkey patties. Guest guest
Hi Liz! > Hi, I'm Liz. My son is 14 and was diagnosed with UC on July 31st. He's 5' 11 " and weighs 174 right now. He was 196 at the end of school. He's built like a football player, so he's skinny. We did the intro diet fanatically for 2 days. (Also - he's been gluten free for 3 years and was dairy free for most of his life. He's dairy free again because any milk products definitely make his symptoms worse.) Great! What are his symptoms as of now?? I was dairy free for quite a while too. I tried making meringues and they turned out like salt water taffy - that's the only really sweet thing he's had. He's had a smoothie and some almond flour pancakes and that's what he's eaten all week. If eggs are bothering him either try cooking them another way, if it still bothers him leave it out for now. I notoriously was forcing soft boiled eggs on myself and it kept me sick.. Meanwhile it was one of Marilyn's staple foods. I think he is eating quite a bit of fruit. I would try using some steamed zucchinis in his diet too. How many bananas a day? Does he like fish? You can steam fish. The pears are legal (I don't know what made me say they weren't total mistake on my behalf- sorry) I guess what I was trying to say is maybe you can make your own apple or pear sauce if he's eating so much of it? Lots of mini meals consisting of protein can be a lot better than 3 big meals. Something to also think about and tweak. > I read on another website that canned coconut milk is okay as long as there is no sugar or guar gum added. We normally have a lot of coconut milk since we don't cook/bake with milk. There is a definite difference in the consistency in the cans with and without the guar gum, so I believe the label when it says that the only ingredients are coconut milk and water. Even if there were a legal canned coconut milk this is an extremely advanced food and should not be consumed now. Peanut butter and using coconut too soon are major reasons why people fail on the diet. Also, being on the SCD we learn there is something called the %2 rule. Where a manufacturer does not have to reveal 2% of the ingredients. There are also 3rd parties to the manufacturing process etc.. In order for a commercial product to be legal we must get a letterhead from the company stating this. You would not want your son's healing derailed due to a can of coconut milk that you " believe " is ok. Even if it is ok, it is a very very very advanced food. I know it is a bummer but once you get the swing of it, it gets a lot easier. Many of us heal and get our lives back due to this diet! > " Canned pears are not legal as well. " > Why? Even BTVC says they are if in their own juice. My bad, sorry. I read this differently for some reason. > " How are you cooking the soup? " > Boiling a whole chicken for 12 hours and adding carrots and onions, salt to taste. Debone the chicken, mash the carrots and toss it back into the broth. Which type of carrots are you using? > " Have you guys done the into diet and slowly added foods back in? " Yep > > " Down the line you can add bone broth, Ghee, avocado, half and half yogurt (proceed very slowly unless he has a true dairy allergy) There is plenty of nourishment and calorie rich food on the diet!! " > > He hasn't done well with dairy his whole life. It definitely makes his symptoms worse, so there's no way we're doing any of it now. > Ok, Understood. I would think about SLOWLY trying to intro avocado, coconut oil. > " Hang in there.. you guys are gonna get the hang of it! " > > Thanks - I'm just feeling a little frustrated right now. It's frustrating. Trust me, we have all been there! This is coming from a person that finally was doing better on the diet and then I ate contaminated meat.. so I had to figure out intro and foods all over again and start from scratch (I started from scratch 3 times!) > Argghh - I see that the " rich text editor " doesn't work on my computer. I tried to make all the questions in italic and the answers in bold. Argh indeed. Just put in a bunch of space between replies- that makes it easy enough. According to my research, the only things that are legal at this point (we're on day 8) are Chicken, fish and steak, eggs, squash or zucchini, applesauce or baked apples, pearsauce or baked pears, bananas. Guest guest
Are there other things he can snack on? " cooked spinach, coconut oil, butter - or don't you do dairy? other oils, cucumber, meatloaf or chicken loaf. " I'd faint if my son actually ate spinach. I don't see that spinach or cucumbers are okay at this stage? No dairy, although a bit of butter would be okay - but on what? Meatloaf is a possibility - what do people use instead of breadcrumbs? I'll puree some carrots to put in along with the egg. No tomatoes yet though - no ketchup to go with it. Maybe I'll wait until that's okay. THIS IS WHY IT'S SO HARD! He's getting to the point where he'd rather just not eat. How do other teenagers do this? Thanks, Liz

Sorry. But food labeling laws are crap in this country. IE; Grass fed does not mean grass fed, cage free does not mean cage free, MSG free does not mean MSG free- they use euphemisms and double speak!! Manufacturers and 3rd parties get away with murder. I cannot tell you how many things I have learned have junk added to them since being on SCD. Especially things like juices, canned items, chicken!! etc. My goodness it's depressing. Let him heal before you start thinking about convenience foods... SCD calls for fanatical adherence. You can make tomato sauce and freeze it! Buying something safe is a challenge for us. If you make a mistake and he is ok, omit the item and just move on. We have die off cycles on SCD (not everyone though) some of us feel absolutely horrendous and awful. It's part of the dance as it is a major component of healing. So many of us go on intro. I at times eat the wrong foods with long lasting consequences, I go on intro. " > > Should we start over with the intro diet every time we make a mistake? We've already started over once and it's only been 8 days. Should I wait for him to have worse symptoms before starting over? Absolutely not! Intro is for when nothing else is working and he isn't getting results and feels awful. After a medical procedure I go on intro. Things like that. Hopefully you guys won't need to do this but it is there! > Thank you so much for the help. I'm used to being the one helping others on my celiac disease message board. This would be so much easier if it was me, not my son, that needed the diet. I could live on chicken, zucchini and bananas for a long time and not even care. We all start out learning and then pay it forward. Welcome again! Guest guest
Hey Liz, > " What are his symptoms as of now?? " > > Graphic here: He really only has one main symptom - usually once a day, (sometimes twice) he has explosive gas with bright red B and " chunks " , in his words. Sometimes he'll have a slight stomach ache and sometimes the BMs are uncomfortable. He says he doesn't feel bad at all. His other stools are soft, but not D and might have a bit of B If he isn't feeling bad I think he is on the right track this takes time. How many BM's does he have daily?? > " I think he is eating quite a bit of fruit. I would try using some steamed zucchinis in his diet too. " > > If I could get him to eat zucchini, I would! He eats fruit because there's nothing else to eat besides meat at this stage and you can only eat so much of that. There is plenty to eat on the diet. The stages are a guideline not set in stone. Too much fruit can give people D.. What about squash, spinach? > " How many bananas a day? " > > One or two - with brown spots only. Great! > " Does he like fish? You can steam fish. " > > Does it have to be steamed? Yuck! I bake it or grill it on the BBQ. > He went salmon fishing in Alaska in June with my husband and we have tons of salmon. I was planning to start that tonight. No it does not have to be steamed. Some people do well with broiled others do well with poached. Wild Salmon is fantastic!! I eat it daily! > " Lots of mini meals consisting of protein can be a lot better than 3 big meals. Something to also think about and tweak. " > > He kind of eats all day long with 3 main meals in between. Ok. What I am saying when he snacks if he can eat a bit of protein with it. > " Peanut butter and using coconut too soon are major reasons why people fail on the diet. " > > We don't even have peanut butter in the house - he won't be eating that for a while. I won't give him coconut milk again - he doesn't like it anyway. Good, many people stumble with peanut butter and coconut so I am just letting you know so you can make good decisions down the line and not make the mistakes that many of us have made. > " Also, being on the SCD we learn there is something called the %2 rule. Where a manufacturer does not have to reveal 2% of the ingredients. There are also 3rd parties to the manufacturing process etc.. " > > I'm actually somewhat familiar with this, since I've been an avid label reader due to being fanatically gluten free for several years. I don't understand why this is still an issue since the truth in labeling laws went into effect. There have been lawsuits over undeclared wheat, corn and other " top 8 " allergens in food. I'm not trying to argue or let him cheat, I just don't want to deprive him of something he can safely eat, or go to all the trouble to make something from scratch (like tomato sauce) when I can buy something safe. Write the company get them to reveal %100 the ingredients on a company letterhead (as on the phone or via email they sometimes make false claims) and use that! Until then.. Make your own! > " How are you cooking the soup? " > Boiling a whole chicken for 12 hours and adding carrots and onions, salt to taste. Debone the chicken, mash the carrots and toss it back into the broth. > > " Which type of carrots are you using? " > > Organic carrots in a 5# bag - Earthbound Farms brand. I peel them first. Great. Just avoid all baby carrots! > " It's frustrating. Trust me, we have all been there! Guest guest
Jodi, Thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions. I really appreciate it! " If he isn't feeling bad I think he is on the right track this takes time. How many BM's does he have daily?? " I think just one or two. He's still not quite comfortable talking too much about it. (It took him 4 months of bloody D to even tell me - he thought he was dying or something and got scared.) " What I am saying when he snacks if he can eat a bit of protein with it. " He gets plenty of protein - maybe not with every snack, but he eats chicken or chicken soup for snacks quite often. Last night he had leftover steak. " Sorry. " Sadly, I believe you 100%. This is why I've always bought as much organic food as possible and feed my family homemade everything as much as possible. Seriously, my kids already think I'm a health food fanatic. My husband is thinking I'm paranoid now. " You can make tomato sauce and freeze it! " I've actually already done this and used to do it regularly. I just need to find some affordable tomatoes so I can make some more spaghetti sauce and ketchup. " Write the company get them to reveal %100 the ingredients on a company letterhead (as on the phone or via email they sometimes make false claims) and use that! Until then.. Make your own! " Is there a website where people have shared which companies have sent letters so we don't reinvent the wheel? " Great. Just avoid all baby carrots! " Why? I haven't had them for a couple of weeks, because we bought the big bag of regular carrots, but I usually buy them for lunches - what's wrong with them? Thank you again for the help! I'm off to shop and cook now! Liz
