In fact, I've known many first-time mommies who were in their 40's. Obstetrics has come a long, long way!. >> Hi -- I've been thinking a lot about this issue lately, too. I have two kids already (both when I was obese/morbidly obese in my 30's and didn't have any complications at all, thank God. I wouldn't want to risk it again, though at those weights since I know I was a statistical abberation). My husband and I have always been open to a third, but recently I have really, really been leaning towards it as a desired reality. My body and mind have never felt 'oh, this is it' after the birth of either child. I would love a larger family (3-4 kids -- three biological and one international adoption from China/Asia since my dh is Chinese-American). Of course, we must wait until 18 months-2 years to even think about fertility and then I'll be 37-38 years old (pushing 40, so to speak LOL). I'm not that concerned about it since many, many women in their 40's conceive (for a good many it is their first child as well). On one hand, there is the issue of fertility (some experience difficulties conceiving a first child in the 40's), but our fertility does go up after the surgery because of the weight loss, so that may even it out. There's always the precautionary concern about birth defects (and that amnio, which I don't think I'm going to opt for since there are other non-invasive techniques being developed to assess risk for things such as downs syndrome, etc.) but many, many women have had healthy children in their 40's! Maybe we'll all be joining some future list 'DS_babies' or something like that in a few years! ROFL all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal Dr. Gagner/DR. Quinn assisting/Mt.
