The funny thing is old feelings--habits die hard. When I was writing that I

was very worried about what others would think of those food choices!!!! I

guess those " food selfconcious " feelings are hard to put to rest.

<< I have really enjoyed the posts about what we're eating. Dawn's

one-year-out menu gives me hope -- I'm missing sandwiches and things

like that. Every few days I feel hungry for an Italian cold-cut sub. I

actually did have a little of a BMT sub from Subway when I was about

three weeks out from surgery -- I ate about half of a scant 1 inch

slice! Well, at least I ate the meat and cheese, a bit of pickle and

green pepper, and about 1 bite of bread. It was wonderful!

>>

I must be a mutant, but at almost three months post-op, I've

been eating sandwiches for about a month and a half. I have

a kaiser roll (or bagel, 7 grain bread or white, etc.) and pile on the

meat, cheese, whatever. :)

I'm beginning to think I must have had a HUMONGOUS stomach

before the surgery. I questioned my surgeon (Dr. Gagner) about this

when I went for my three week post-op visit... even then I was able

to eat about 6-8 oz per meal. He said I had the 'average size' post-op

stomach (100cc+)... and he didn't seem that concerned... AGH! LOL

I eat 1 french bread pizza (then I am TOTALLY FULL) or 1 chicken breast

sandwich (on toasted 7 grain bread - yum!) and am totally full. Sometimes I

can't eat the last bit of the sandwich, but I almost always finish most of

it. Sometimes I'll just eat the meat without the bread if I don't feel like

the bread. I've found that sandwiches are a good, quick and easy way to get

the protein in! LOL I could only eat 1/2 bagel or 1/2 sandwich when I was

about 4 weeks post-op.

My mother was incredulous about how much I could eat as an immediate post-op:

I was doing 4 oz at a time for meals out of the hospital without any

problems. It's good in that I can get the nutrients in, but I wonder if it

slows weight loss... I seem to be losing slower than most people but I think

I'm still within the 'target range' (I'm at 265 now down from 307 in about

three months). I figured out the other day that I have about 80 more lbs to

lose... wow! I'm under the 'must lose 100 lbs mark!' ROFL

From my experience, sometimes I wonder if I had the surgery at all... I'm

totally serious. I have experienced gas/cramping but it hasn't been severe

or extended. I've had some pretty powerful farts... but they aren't the

norm. I've had loose bowels, but never uncontrollably so. Now my movements

are for the most part pretty solid and have always been rather regular (2

upon waking, sometimes one at night or in the early am).

It feels great! :)

Hi Ogretta: There is another list too you may be

interested in called wlspostopeating. It is new and

people post their daily food logs there. I too got

bored of the soft diet and just started after week 2

experimenting. I just made sure to chew, chew, chew. I

even had a little guacamole the first week! I would

say go for it, but just try 1 new thing a day, so if

you have a bad reaction, you know what it's from. But

some people may tell you differently.

I too get bored with what to eat often! I find if I

dont write out menus ahead of time then I am lost when

it comes to eating. I write them out on Sunday night

and do a weeks worth. They are guidelines, I dont

follow them to a tee. It just helps me with shopping,

etc...

Good luck!

You are ready to step out a bit, Ogretta.

Break one egg into a Pyrex measuring cup. Add a dash of milk, and

beat with a fork. Place in the microwave for 45 seconds. Re-beat

the partially cooked portion into the uncooked portion. Go for

another 45 sec. in the microwave, and re-beat if necessary. When it

is done, the eggs should rise in the measuring cup like a souffle. I

add some powdered Molly McButter to the mix when first beating--for

flavor. I also cook a strip of low-salt bacon in the microwave by

wrapping it in a paper towel of several thicknesses to absorb the fat

as it is cooked out of the bacon. Plenty of protein and some

potassium from the bacon.

Also, Silk brand of soy milk, in flavors--not at all bad. I add some

OptiFast left over from 17 years ago (in hermetically sealed

envelopes), and blend. You can use Carnation Instant Breakfast

instead. Loads of protein, liquid and vitamins.

Good, hearty soup, say from a gourmet grocery store. If the lumpy

solids are too much for you, puree the soup in a blender. Yummy.

Same for stew; add a bit of gravy wo make it puree better.

Bad. Sugar water. The sugar is not good for you, and it is absorbed.

>no longer have a taste for crystal lite.

Try flavored skim milk. Or Silk. At least, you will get some

protein along with the liquid.

You should also be able to eat post-roasted meats. Two days ago, I

pot roasted some boneless short ribs of beef (very little fat on

them) with onions, fresh carrots, frsth corn-on-the-cob cut into very

small pieces, garlic and barbecue sauce. Absolutely delicious.

Then, my DW got a fresh turkey breast. i made it into a soup, adding

fresh carrots, onions, garlic, salt, pepper and a large can of

crushed tomatoes. Then cut up some of the cooked turkey into the

soup, and removed the rest to cool and later slice for sandwiches or

for croquets, or whatever.

I have also boiled eggs and made egg salad, and have also made tuna

salad. Great on plain crackers. A little goes a long way.

We also broiled fresh salmon, but my intestines rebelled at the oil

in the salmon. Too bad, as broiled salmon is one of our favorites.
