LOL...my kids are oddballs too, I guess, but that has turned into what I like about them. Many "normal" kids are kind of unpleasant and mine are sweet and funny and silly and creative...very cool to be around.

MANY GF people think GF is the bees knees but they can NEVER go off of it, it doesn't heal them, it simply subdues the symptoms. At least with SCD there is a possibility that he could one day eat at restaurants, eat the occasional slice of birthday cake...whatever. My husband resists SCD because he feels better on GFCF than he did before it, but he will not be able to heal this way, IMO. Besides...on the GF diet you are still eating all kinds of things that I no longer consider edible...soy and corn, for example, can be eaten...or made into chairs and fuel. There is something fishy about that!! lol

Good luck and be well, it will even out for him sooner rather than later, I imagine.

Elaine's daughter cannot eat rice and she eats a primarily SCD diet but she also eats other things, yep!! One of my son's doctors has a daughter that has recovered from Asperger's on SCD...she eats an entirely normal, though very healthy, diet now. I would imagine how young you are and depending on how much damage you have in your gut are two major factors in this. I have it as a goal in my heart for my kids...they are very young and I think such recovery is possible for them. We will never eat corn or soy again, however. Yuck.Now...if you add stuff in before you are ready, heck yeah you will have problems. Elaine's daughter was SCD for seven years before venturing off. My doctor's daughter was on for 2 or 3 before trying illegals. It is, of course, individual.

There is no reason I know of to think that SCD will make him UNABLE to ever eat gluten or drink milk...it doesn't CREATE intolerances, it reveals them. They were already there and just unidentified and causing problems on the down low, so to speak. Many intolerances are overcome while being on the diet...I read stories of it all the time on Pecanbread and the various people I talk to about SCD.

There is reason to be optimistic and to not freak out...:)

If one has celiac disease they can NEVER have gluten again, no matter how much they are healed. Think of it as someone who has a peanut allergy--they can never have peanuts. Introducing gluten again would only start the vicious cycle again for a celiac patient. Now maybe I, with mild UC may be able to have gluten with significant healing, but a celiac could not.

i've never heard that -that they can heal and add back in GLUTEN????I'm pretty sure they can heal but once they put gluten back in - there's a celiac's damage againIMHO, I don't see why you would WANT to add back in anything that would make your body sick. My goal through all of this is to find the diet that makes my body happiest and healthiest, and stick with that. I can see how it would be nice to have the OPTION of eating something else, say, gluten, for if you were out and had nothing else to eat, or in case of non-pure restaurant food. But as far as going back to a 'normal' diet, it doesn't seem worth it, even if you can 'tolerate' it. Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds! Page 1 of BTVC very first chapter says........

"In 1951, after many years of clinical experience, Drs. Sidney V. and Merrill P. Haas published a book entitled Management of Celiac Disease. Directed to the medical community, the book documented the doctors' experiences in treating and curing hundreds of cases of celiac disease as well as cases of cystic fibrosis of the pancreas. Their approach was dietary, and they used a well-balance, normal diet that was highly specific as to the types of sugars and starches allowed. When patients followed this Specific Carbohydrate Diet for a minimum of one year, they were then able to return to a normal diet with complete and permanent dissapearance of symptoms."

also on page 1....

"many students, friends, and others whom I have seen in my practice who were suffering from ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, celiac disease (not cured by a gluten free diet), diverticulitis, and various types of chronic diarrhea have tried the Haas Diet and most of them are now free of their respective diseases."

Research done recently has shown that not to be true, actually, re: peanut

allergies. I saw a short documentary about it. But I can't remember the

approach used in reintroducing peanuts. I do remember the good result,

though! (I'll try to find the information, if anybody's interested.)

You wouldn't. The point is, it's possible for some people to quit reacting

to certain foods.

Why ever not? I'd go back to an expanded diet in a flash if I could

tolerate some of the foods I now can't eat? You can't assume that you'll

always react to everything you react to now. If you got to the point of

not reacting to foods you like to eat, why continue to treat yourself as

if ill if you're not?

I think my mom mentioned that. Was it the one where they gave them

tiiiny amounts of peanut, and then built it up over time? I think they

started with a tiny fraction of a peanut, and then built up an

immunity so they weren't allergic anymore.
