Guest guest
What is the preferred colonoscopy prep for SCD? My son's doctor usually requests milk of magnesia and dulcolax. The nurse thought miralax might take too long, but said she'd wait to hear back from me after I checked with the SCD group, and then see if we could change the usual orders. Thanks, Cathy 15 yo son w uc scd 2007

The nurse thought miralax might take too long, but said she'd wait to hear back from me after I checked with the SCD group, and then see if we could change the usual orders. Miralax is SCD-legal. My experience with colonoscopy was as follows: My colonoscopy was on 2 January. On 30 December, I had pureed leftover Christmas turkey and pureed vegetables. For a change of pace, I had pureed vegetables with a hard boiled egg thrown in. I ate small amounts all day. On 31 December, I had mostly clear liquids with one meal at noon of pureed turkey and vegetables. I confess, I cheated a trifle: Harry and I split a hard cider to celebrate the new year. Hey, it was clear, right? (But it was a good thing I had 36 hours to go before the procedure so the alcohol could clear out of my system.) On 1 January, I had all clear liquids, all day, having strained broth, or strained meat juices which set up on their own or broth which I mixed with legal gelatin to set up. Just EATING something made me less conscious of the all liquids stuff. I had strained fruit juices (pear, mostly) every couple of hours. At 5p, I took the laxatives. At 7p, I started drinking the Trilyte. It took me about 2 hours to get two liters down. At around 10p, I'd finished squirting, so I pulled on my mask, set the alarm clock for 2a, and grabbed some Zzs. At 2a, I woke up and had some broth and juice. Then started the remaining two liters of Trilyte. Was pretty shocked when the squirts started again, because I was " running clear " at the end of the previous procedure. At 4a, Harry had to call the doctor because my back was flaring. Doctor had no solution except to bring my supplements to the procedure and take them afterwards. I ended up taking a dose of bromelain, which was enough of anti-inflammatory that I did not end up throwing up and screaming from back pain. (The lidoderm patch worked, but only lasted about 4 hours instead of 12 hours.) Around 5a, the squirts were done. I had some more water, got dressed, pilled my mask back on, and lay down for an hour or so. Harry drove me to the procedure. They took me around 7:30a. They used different meds because of my sleep apnea, but I was awake enough to watch some of the proceedings. I was mostly awake during the time it took for the meds to wear off, concentrating on breathing. Harry and I were home by 11a, and I ate some broth and pureed meat and vegetables, then went back, pulled my mask back on, and went to sleep for about 6 hours. After that, I got up, and was able to eat a normal dinner. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Guest guest
I'm going in for my first colonoscopy in eight years on Thursday... The day before I am to eat nothing but clear liquids. At 5 pm that same day I am to drink 8 oz of Golytely (or it may be something else they prescribed) every 10-15 minutes, drinking 2 liters total by 7pm. Then the day of the procedure at 6 am I'm to drink one 10 oz bottle of Magnesium Citrate Solution. Here's my question: Should I try to get extra child care help for the evening before when I start drinking the stuff and the early morning of after I've taken the Magnesium stuff? Am I going to be glued to the potty and unable to care for my 3 year old and 5 month old - feed them, get them into bed, get them out of be and dressed in the morning.. during these periods of time? My husband works late and leaves early.... Alli > >My son's doctor usually requests milk of > >magnesia and dulcolax. Guest guest
Definitely get some help! You will be glued to the potty. My son just did this prep a couple of months ago and there was no way he could do anything. When I did it I didn't have kids yet and I don't think I could have possibly cared for two that age. You may not be glued to the pot the whole time, but you do NOT need to be in the middle of the " squirts " and have the little ones get into something! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

They gave me " flavor packets " which were so chock full of illegals that I ditched them. The Trilyte didn't taste good, but it wasn't too bad. It's supposed to have all the electrolytes you need to cover what you lose with the diarrhea, but I did not find this to be the case when I did my clean-out for my surgery. I chose to use E-Lyte, from Body-Bio, for added electrolytes. You can also use the homemade electrolyte drink. I know I've posted my complete directions for my colonoscopy around here somewhere. You might search on it, and I'll see if I can find it and repost. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
