Don't take a bunch of stuff to the hospital. You'll be on good drugs, so

your brain won't be able to process the classic novel you've been

planning on reading. A magazine, or more likely TV will be about all

your brain cells can process.

In the hospital, do the little breathing thingy. I know, I hated it. It

does help though. Do your walkies!

On the trip home, and for the next several days, keep a spare pillow

handy. Press this against your tummy any time you need to laugh, cough,

roll over, whatever. This may not apply to you if you have Lap though.

Be aware that this is major surgery, even if yours is lap. Although you

might just end up with a few small holes, you will need to give your

body time to recover. A lot of folks are surprised by this, when a

couple of weeks after surgery, they find that they are still tired, and

need a nap. It's normal, but it does pass.

Guess that's enough for now. Relax, you'll do fine!

WWWOOOHHHOOOO wtg on your date...wow next week.

Best advice is to save the little cups they give you in the hospital

to eat out of when you get home.

I had open, so I slept in a recliner for a few weeks.

Please see previous posts about sticking to the rules and not

tempting to see if you can handle foods on the no no list. Take

advantage of your fastest losing time...the first 6 months.

Hi Specialkmix:

I'm a newbie post-op. Just had surgery on June 8th. I've lost 17 lbs so far. (it was two weeks ago on Wednesday).

Here are somethings I can suggest: go to the store now, and get lots of Sugar Free popsicles. They help you get the water in...helps you to slow down and not consume too fast, because it's frozen. ALso get some herbal decaf mint tea and chamomile tea. That really helped to calm the tummy down. Buy stuff for stage two, also. you'll likely be on that pretty soon after you get home from the hospital. So, cream of wheat or cream of rice, unsweetened applesauce, creamy soups (low fat), sugar free pudding, and yoghurt. look for low fat, low sugar. Hood's is the best (thanks Tim), in that it is very low carb and sugar and as much protein as any I've seen (I think 13 g). People seem to find it at Raley's. Albertson's has a brand that's pretty decent, too...not as high in protein, not as low in sugar...but not bad.

As for vitamins...my mom started putting all of my vitamins in one of my little plastic cups (you get them at your pre-op class, and my mom cribbed some more at the hospital). I have the schedule on my frig: I have a multi and the iron right after breakfast. I have a calcium an hour later...another calcium after lunch...the other multi after dinner...and then the final calcium before bed. I take the B-12 on Wednesdays and Sundays. By having the daily dose in the cup, I can see right away if I've forgotten to take one.

Use your little plastic cup to measure. Also...Uncle Timmy gave me these little baby forks and spoons that make eating small amounts much easier. I think I'm going to buy a little silver one pretty soon.

Have lots of bottled water nearby...the sports ones or bigger ones help you keep count of the water you are consuming (don't forget to include the hot tea and the popsicles as part of your water intake.)

I was quite sore in my back afterwards...the gas that they fill you with during the surgery (to enlarge your tummy cavity) settles elsewhere and you get sore. My mom gave me little massages with baby oil and powder, that helped alot.

Expect to burp. I did it constantly. My family thought I was hysterically funny because I was drugged beyond belief going "Burp, oooh sorry." "Burp, excuse me." "Burp, pardon me." They finally told me to quit apologizing. Not sure I ever expected that.

Ask all of your friends and family to wait several days before calling. I got so many freaking phone calls I couldn't ever sleep enough. " Well meaning? Great, send me flowers and cards...but don't CALL for awhile. Send me e-mails, I'll respond when I'm awake...but don't be freakin' callin' me every second of the day."

Have some loose fitting clothes available. The incisions are at spots where waistbands can irritate them...so be prepared with loose clothes.

OTher than that...just go in with a good attitude...walk right away when they ask you, even if you feel like crap. Use the breathing machine they are giving to you...practice alot beforehand to get your lung capacity up. Use it alot afterwards to get all of the stuff out of your lungs. I have some lung issues (bronchitis all of the time), so I just quit using it recently.

Good luck!!!

Yeah, Eleanor...even with LAP you get sore. Feels like you've done a hundred sit-ups or something. The ride home was tough. Every bump hurt. Also...when you are getting up from the bed, roll onto your side, and swing your legs out to the floor and push your upper body up with your arms. It spares your arms more.

They send you home with pain meds. Use them. It helps you to sleep (although it also constipates you a bit). I found the pain went away pretty quickly with LAP.

Thanks for the response Robynn!

Congrats on your 17lbs lost so far! Sounds like you are doing

everything perfectly! Who was your surgeon?

Thank you for all the good advice. Especially about the vites! I am

a lot less nervous now that I have shopping to do to prepare for the

big day.

I have a couple more questions if you don't mind?

Did you have a hard time once home in getting in and out of bed? Can

you sleep on your side now? I am a side sleeper personally,so this

worries me.

Do you use protien shakes at all? Or just protien powder mixed into

your food? I was thinking of doing the later.

Also does food taste good at all when you do eat? Is it hard to want

to eat anything at all? is a whole popsicle still considered a

serving post op?

I will stop now on the questions. Sorry if I asked too many. I

wanted to attend the last support group meeting, but I was unable to

schedule it in.

Thanks again for the response!

Kay

Lap scheduled 6/28- Dr Baggs.

Richmond now doesn't advance you to the final stage until 12 weeks

post-op. I checked on this at my pre-surgery class.

Hi Robynn,

Thanks again for all your wisdom!

I don't know anyone that has had this surgery and it really settles

my mind to know I can come here and get some answers. I can't believe

tomorrow is the day. On the way to work this am, I felt like I was

going to have an anxiety attack. How nervous were you once you were

at the hospital? I can't imagine how I am going to sleep tonight.

In prep for your surgery, did you drink some calming tea or

something? Maybe you weren't nervous. I am typically not a nervous

person, but I tell you even my feet were sweating this am!

lol

Thank you for mentioning the level of pain association for the gas, I

was wondering if it would be tolerable. Sounds like it will be okay.

Did you sleep with your legs propped up when on your back?

I am so afraid I will pop a stitch?

I am scheduled for Lap as well.

Were you able to wear a bra okay without it bothering your lap

incisions? I am wondering if it might be better to wear one of those

tank shirts with the built in shelf bra instead?

I am happy to hear about the protein, I will wait on that then and

concentrate on my sips instead. I have never tried cream of wheat, is

there a good brand to recommend?

Okay that is all for now. I may have a few more questions later on.

Thanks for being so kind to respond and " hold my hand " so to speak.

One day away from the NEW me!

Hi Robynn!

I just got my call from the surgery dept. Tomorrow I go in at 11:30

and go to the OR at 1. YAHOO!!

Kinda sucks that it wasn't first thing in the am, but at least I can

sleep in for once(?). I am sure I will be up till 1 or 2 tonight. I

usually can't sleep just for a flight out of town. lol So I know I

am in for a long night.

Anyway, thank you for the tips! I wrote down the cream of wheat

receipe. Sounds good. :-) That is so nice you have your mommy to take

care of you. Mine is letting my husband do all that pampering

instead. But he is a close second to her, so all is good.

You really inspired me to write letters to loved ones. I think that

is the nagging feeling I am having. You hit it on the head when you

said, " ultimately my only fear about death is the effect on those I

love who I would leave behind " . I am going to take quiet time tonight

and write to everyone, and even to symbolicly start " new " with my

life, getting rid of the emotional baggage is a great idea. I haven't

used a journal as a tool in a long time and I think I will buy a

really nice looking one after work on the way home.

I am glad to hear that the pain is managable. I just don't like not

konwing what to expect. I wouldn't feel so apprehensive if I had some

other surgery that I had gone through previously. Hearing your

experience has REALLY put me at ease and I can't thank you enough. I

have printed out what you wrote to remind myself to stick to my

resolve that I can DO this! lol NO wimpy whiney girl for sure!

I can't believe it, but you answered all my questions and now I feel

really confident, secure and READY for surgery!!

Take care,

Kay

Oh I will post after I am back home that I made it safely to

the " other side " . I just can't wait!

You go girl on your progress! You are awesome and a great inspiration!
