Guest guest
In Cystic Fibrosis (CF) clogging of pancreatic ducts leads to an enzyme deficiency in the intestines. Without these enzymes, humans cannot efficiently digest fats and proteins. The fats and proteins pass straight through the digestive system and produce greasy, smelly bowel movements. Far worse, the resulting malnutrition used to cause people with Cystic Fibrosis to die in childhood. So CF people like DS post ops can't absorb fat soluble vitamins. Thus the CF source provides the water soluble version of these. They are what people with CF also take. in Seattle ----- Original Message ----- > -hi all, still curious about sending the adeks perscription to cystic > fibrosis--can anyone share the reason for this..just > wondering,,thanks take good care > ogretta > pre-op & ready > may 11 , 2001 > dr inabnet > > > > -- In duodenalswitch@y..., ruisha@a... wrote: > > > > In a message dated 4/7/01 5:01:13 PM, duodenalswitch@y... writes: > > > > << Hi everyone. Guest guest
In a message dated 4/8/01 4:11:32 AM, duodenalswitch writes: << -hi all, still curious about sending the adeks perscription to cystic fibrosis--can anyone share the reason for this..just wondering,,thanks take good care >> Ogretta: Awhile back someone at the Mt Sinai DS support meeting mentioned that he investigated the ADEKS sold through Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). They are 13/bottle (normally quite a bit more expensive, even directly from Scandipharm or at wholesale places like Costco). He said that he asked whether he had to have CF and the customer service rep said 'no'. I also inquired about this and informed them I had a surgery which resulted in malapsorption and required ADEKs, but I don't have CF. They said that wasn't a problem. I just needed a prescription from my doctor. So, this is an option for people who may want to get the ADEks at a lower cost. Most insurances don't cover vitamin supplementation (mine Oxford, doesn't cover any of it - even the iron!), so it is usually at out of pocket expense. Perhaps you or others are fortunate enough to not have to deal with this and only have a co-pay. In that case, I don't think it really would matter if you got them locally, etc. or through CFF. all the best, laparoscopic BPD/DS with gallbladder removal Dr. Gagner/Dr Quinn assisting/Mt.
