Guest guest
Hi everyone, My 11 year old son was just diagnosed with Crohns. The doctor put him on Pentasa last week. I have spent the last week reading and learning about the SCD diet, and we are now organized to start it this weekend. Yesterday, we had an appointment with the doc. As he now ways only about 56 pounds at 11 yeard old, the doctor wants to jump right into Prednisone to reduce the inflammation. I told him that we are going to try this diet first. Am I making the right decision here, or should he go on Prednisone to jumpstart the whole process? He is at a critical stage right now, where his body wants and needs to grow, or else he will be small forever. I know I have to get his intestines healed before he can get the necessary nutrients frome the food. Anyone been through this, or any thoughts? I think one of the best things to do at this point is join the pecanbread.com yahoo group. They are child experts over there and the other mothers and list members will have plenty of good advice. http://www.pecanbread.com/new/local1.html Mara
Guest guest
I agree with Mara (in another post), the pecanbread group should be very helpful to you. But I have to disagree with PJ regarding prednisone. Yes, Elaine’s advice was to stay on medication as necessary. But your son hasn’t taken prednisone. And taking prednisone and turn into a years’-long vicious cycle in itself (I know; it happened to me; I’ve had Crohn’s for 30 years.) My view is that your instinct not to start the prednisone but to try the diet first is a good one. (If you go with any drug, you might want to consider LDN for your son. It works for children as well as adults, and will help his body regulate his immune system; he could just take less than the 4.5 mg that is the normal adult dose. But you’d need to find a doctor willing to prescribe it, which might be a challenge.) I wish you – and him – well. n From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of smdsmom2008 Sent: Friday, August 28, 2009 10:31 AM To: BTVC-SCD Subject: Re: Need Advice I think you will get different opinions here- but this is my perspective. Elaine developed this diet to help her child- and it is her advice to stay on medication. Some people, after being on this diet and having no symptoms for a long time- have stopped medication. There are some parents on here whose children are med free. I hope they will post how long into the diet they made their decision to stop meds. The diet is not an instant cure- and it takes time for the gut to heal. IMHO- I would use the prednisone to get things under control while starting the diet. Once he feels well and is gaining weight- then you can decide about it. Others here may offer more advice, or different advice, but the diet is not a diet vs meds issue- you can use both if that's what it takes to recover. I hope he feels better soon, PJ > > Hi everyone, > > My 11 year old son was just diagnosed with Crohns. The doctor put him on Pentasa last week. Guest guest
Thank you both for your thoughtful responses. I really appreciate it. This is all new to me and I am trying to take everything in. What exactly is LDN? He has been taking Pentasa for the last week and a half, which seems to help the gasiness and stools. But he has now had stomach pains off and on for the last couple of days. We took sugars and grains out of his diet three days ago and offically started the intro phase today. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the help!
