This is a really good question, I think but not so easy to answer. I think it depends on one's recovery experience and also what kind of support is available personally. I mean, if someone has told relatives/friends and they are supportive and caring and one's recovery was pretty remarkable (without complications or problems) such as I have experienced, a support group may not be as crucial. However, if one has had complications, etc. and difficulties I think a support group becomes rather essential to getting through the experience. I am in no way saying only those who have had difficulties post-op should attend support groups or would want to. I'm just saying that the importance of one really varies and can be applicable to a person's particular needs/desires. It is also important that one feel comfortable in a warm, nuturing environment when attending a support group. I did not find that at Mt. Sinai but am really open to and excited about attending the NYU group starting next month! I think that one must have a feeling of confidence when sharing personal information (especially of an emotional nature or dealing with emotional changes related to the surgery) and finding a support group in which one can express oneself, listen and be listened to is crucial. Online support is not to be underrated, either. I mean, developing friendships from this and other lists, sending private e-mails, exchanging phone numbers, getting to know each other is also an excellent method of support and can provide more intimacy and friendship than the general list posting alone.
