Guest guest
Dear Kathy: Welcome to our group. You do not need to be sorry or worry about asking any and all questions here. The DS has been performed for over 10 years and the success rate is among the best in the bariatric surgery world. I am 27 months post-op and have lost 224 pounds my stats are below my signature line but I started out at 384 and weighed 160 19 months later. I am healthy and I feel terrific, I have more energy than I know what to do with. I do not have any problems with my health nor am I limited in anything I want to do. I eat what I want when I want and now that I am over 2 years post-op I eat what a normal person would eat although I eat it a bit slower. Other than the one day of clear liquids and second day of soft foods until I had my leak test I have eaten solid food and was served backed chicken on my 3rd day in the hospital although I could not eat it at that time. I do not have dumping because of sugar and yes I do eat sugar usually something everyday but after a few bites I find I go looking for something with protein instead, with the DS we seem to crave protein which is a good thing. I do not have to chew my food to mush and I don't have to be concerned about getting food stuck it just doesn't happen and as with the DS we keep our pyloric valve we digest food normally and then move it on into the intestines. It is a great idea that you are looking at all of your options and educating yourself but as I am bias the DS is my recommendation to anyone looking into having WLS. If I can be of any help let me know and I am sure that you will get a lot of e-mails back in answer to your questions. Huggles, Tiger Lake Female 160 lbs. Guest guest
Kathy, Welcome to the DS list! I would suggest you go to this URL: http://www.duodenalswitch.com/Patients/Sharon/sharon.html This is a person who had the old-style Biliopancreatic Diversion surgery, the precursor to the DS surgery. She is 10+ years post-op, and is doing very well. She just recently posted a 10 year update to this list as well. Here is a link you can follow to read that message: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/duodenalswitch/message/89414 You can also do a search on specific topics/words like malnutrition, anemia, iron, calcium, osteoporosis, and similar words and see what comes up in the archives of this list. You can read the messages on the DS_results list, too. The rules don't allow pre-ops to post there, but you are welcome to read the messages and see how the folks who are longer post-op are doing. Here is the link to that group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DS_Results I am only 3 months post-op, but I can say that so far, I haven't had any complications at all, unless you count slow weight loss as a complication!
