Guest guest
With one of the sort term side effects of surgery being hair loss, has anyone been able to dye their hair during this phase? What were the effects, if any, on your thinning hair? Yes, I died my hair or else it would look even thinner! I have all gray (actually white) hair. If I don't die it every two weeks it looks very thin (or thinner) because I have translucent outgrowth (even just an eighth of an inch makes it look thin) at the scalp. Don't know if you should or not but I HAD to. By the way I am 37 and have had pretty much all gray hair for about 10 years now. Lucy me!! Dawn Dr. Hess, Bowling Green, OH BPD/DS www.duodenalswitch.com 267 to 165 size 22 to size 10 have made size goal, weight goal may need to be adjusted. no more high blood pressure, sore feet, or dieting! Guest guest
Since there was discussion of donating one's own blood for our surgery, it brings to mind a question that I had: After having a DS, are we ever able to donate blood - at a blood drive, for instance? Secondly, on a different topic: With one of the sort term side effects of surgery being hair loss, has anyone been able to dye their hair during this phase? What were the effects, if any, on your thinning hair? I'd appreciate any and all feedback, thanks! from Philly BMI 63, age 39 Open DS w/ Dr. Pomp, 9am on Wed., June 20, 2001 Aetna USHC, HMO - Doc thinks they will pay! The theory seems to be that if you are still healthy a year later, you're ok to donate. I know the rules change often, because a friend of mine who has donated gallons over the years was banned from future donations because he had malaria as a child. And personally, I don't see whatchildhood malaria could do to your blood if you have since been a healthy man.. but them's the rules. > Secondly, on a different topic: With one of the sort term side effects of > surgery being hair loss, has anyone been able to dye their hair during this > phase? What were the effects, if any, on your thinning hair? > No answers here.. my only recommendation would be to wait & see- as long as the hair isn't over processed, dying it should be ok. If you have lost LOTS of hair, I'd suggest sticking to a lighter color until it grows back just because thin hair is more obvious with dark hair. Since I'm also still preop (for ONLY 9 MORE DAYS!!!), all I can tell you is what I've done, which is try to protein load preop- eat extra protein to build up reserves, plus figure out ways to get my protein in when I'm not hungry right postop. I'm also taking extra zinc & B-vitamins, since they too affect your hair growth. And if you plan to dye it preop, try to do it around 2 weeks to 10 days before surgery (not sure why, but that's what I've always been told to tell my patients going in for surgery). Best luck to you too- I hope your insurance gets on the stick!! Hugs, Liane preop, Dr Warden Ocean Springs, MS

What were the effects, if any, on your thinning hair? I am definitely experiencing thinning hair since surgery. I continue to dye my hair and don't see any additional strain it places on it, for me it's worth the risk and I think it actually adds volume and body to it. YMMV however. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Nine times out of ten it will grow back much thicker I am told and that's what I focus on. Jillian Surgery 12/11 75 lbs gone for good and more to come! Sorry can't help there, I have always been anemic, not only can I not donate in blood drives, I could not even donate to myself before surgery which wasn't good because I ended up needing 2 pints in the hospital. I was told the blood is very safe now and I am betting my life on that. > > Secondly, on a different topic: With one of the sort term side effects of > surgery being hair loss, has anyone been able to dye their hair during this > phase? I have been using rogain for about a month now and just started using Nioxin in the last week, I know that is a little overboard, but my hair is so thin now that even a little hair loss is noticable. If you can use Nioxin now before you go into surgery, you may not have any hair loss at all (at least that is what I heard). Teri

Guest guest
I'm so interested in this after tattoo part. I had my last tattoo in March, does that mean I can't donate blood to myself or is it donating to the public? Is it because I might have a disease from the tattoo? Thanks, Re: A couple of questions for the post ops.... > Since there was discussion of donating one's own blood for our surgery, it > brings to mind a question that I had: After having a DS, are we ever able > to donate blood - at a blood drive, for instance? > you are restricted from dontating blood after ANY surgery for 1 year. but that's not a big deal- you have the same restriction after getting a tattoo. Guest guest
You can pick up hepatitis from a tattoo needle, if the business is not cleaning the tools properly. You can donate to yourself, because your not introducing new disease to your body, not that you have any diseases, this is just an example. I am going to shut up now.
