About three months ago I finally paid the price for the way I've been eating all these years. I got so sick I lost 50 pounds in three months. I also have chronic advanced stage Lyme Disease which I believe has played a role in my IBS problems. The term, " you reap what you sow " is true, and I'm paying the price of my poor eating habits. Sadly, my Lyme Disease only makes matters worse, and not just for my stomach, just about every part of my body has been attacked by this terrible disease. I'm sorry to hear this . Lyme disease sounds terrible. I know Jodi on the list has been battling it forever. If you have any questions or anything, I'm sure she'd help you. > I rarely have D, most of my difficulties are with being regular and it's mostly like I described it, hard and stone like. I feel like the output often seems to be considerable less than the input. About three weeks ago I bought some stuff called Endefen by Metagenics and some of their probiotics that I found out later is made from soy, plus it had bifidobacterium in it which apparently is a no-no on this program. Yes, bifidobacterium is a no-no on the diet. I think it's because it can overflourish in your guts. > I also was taking some Garden of Life Primal Defense. In addition to that I was drinking six ounces of aloe vera everyday. After taking these products for a few days that's when I noticed my gut problems getting worse. I figured this stuff was cleaning my gut and causing it to feel bad but assumed that soon it will all get better. That didn't happen. It's unfortunate that I spent a lot of money on this stuff thinking it would help me when in reality it most likely did me more harm. I was doing the exact same thing before I found SCD. The Garden of Life guy fails to mention that he did SCD prior to founding his own diet which is very profitable for him. I drank aloe vera juice like crazy. I did colon cleanses. I did everything I could find on the Internet. The ONLY thing that has helped is SCD and this group. THIS GROUP ROCKS!!!! > After doing some research on IBS and going to the SCD website I realized the very products I was taking were doing me more harm than good. Unfortunately, it was too late and now I'm suffering even more now than I was prior to taking these products. Today I took some Digest Gold (legal) before my lunch and I could really tell the difference how much it helped me. I've had less pain after eating for the first time in awhile. I'm trying to do all I can to follow the SCD and I think it's beginning to help me. I need to order some legal probiotics but haven't been able to find any in the health food store. Guess I'll have to go online to get them. Any recommendations? Lucyskitchen.com She has been on the diet for 15 years. She has legal acidophilus, calcium, b vitamins, multi vitamin and a couple other things. She also has a wonderful easy to follow cookbook. I have several and her's is simple. I take her acidophilus, b, and multi. If you are also battling yeast, you can take S. Boulardii which is a good yeast that helps. I got mine here http://www.giprohealth.com/saccharomycesboulardii.aspx > You mentioned prunes and magnesium. I went and brought some natural prune juice (no sugar or preservatives) and started drinking that. Is that " legal " ? I saw prunes were legal but nothing about commercial bought prune juice was mentioned. I think commercial prune juice is ok as long as it is has no other ingredients. I make my own because it's fast and cheaper than buying prune juice and I go through so many prunes. Click this link to see what Elaine had to say http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/constipation.htm > As a Lyme patient I was told to take Magnesium Malate or Glycinate but I noticed on the SCD site it says to take Magnesium Citrate or Stearate. Is there a reason for this? I noticed that the malate does tend to upset my stomach a bit but it helps me with my cramps which is common with Lyme patients. I guess I'll have to look on the SCD supplement websites to see what is recommended. Any suggestions? I'm not sure. Pecanbread.com has a list of legal supplements and what's legal and illegal as far as fillers and additions. Pecanbread.com is a website that was created and maintained by the mothers of autistic children but they follow SCD and have a lot of great suggestions and information. http://pecanbread.com/p/Sup1.html > Glad to know you are improving. I hope things continue to get better for you. Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. I am SOOOO much better than I was 2 years ago. I really feel like I have my health in my own hands. People that are on meds for IBD still have flares from time to time. Now when I have one, I know what to do to get it under control without meds. I have resigned to the fact that one day I might have to get on something to keep my symptoms under control while SCD still does it's magic, but hopefully that day will never come. Best Wishes, Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - 21 months
Guest guest
Well, that's not legal. So no one here is going to advise you to take it unless they do so offlist. Possibly it works for some people, but it is best to start SCD by sticking to its protocol and not introducing illegals, because that way you won't know if the diet is working for you or not. If you later decide your body needs additional tweaks in order to heal, that's another story - and your best bet for advice in that case is to join yahoogroups/healing crow. I know it's frustrating to lay out a bunch of money on fancy probiotics right before starting SCD, only to be told immediately afterwards that they are not legal for the diet, and being advised not to take them, because I did precisely the same thing with some other probiotics, including (but not limited to) some garden of life stuff. One thing that is perfectly legal and has helped a lot of us heal that is absolutely complementary with the diet is the drug LDN - however, before starting that, it is better to deal with your Lyme disease first. What are you doing for that? It sounds like you have some layers of illness going on, and they are probably all impacting each other and worsening the cycle. Mara > Misty, > > Good idea.
