Guest guest
Misty, Yeah, well, I'm 56 years old and I've eaten like there is no tomorrow. About three months ago I finally paid the price for the way I've been eating all these years. I got so sick I lost 50 pounds in three months. I also have chronic advanced stage Lyme Disease which I believe has played a role in my IBS problems. The term, " you reap what you sow " is true, and I'm paying the price of my poor eating habits. Sadly, my Lyme Disease only makes matters worse, and not just for my stomach, just about every part of my body has been attacked by this terrible disease. I rarely have D, most of my difficulties are with being regular and it's mostly like I described it, hard and stone like. I feel like the output often seems to be considerable less than the input. About three weeks ago I bought some stuff called Endefen by Metagenics and some of their probiotics that I found out later is made from soy, plus it had bifidobacterium in it which apparently is a no-no on this program. I also was taking some Garden of Life Primal Defense. In addition to that I was drinking six ounces of aloe vera everyday. After taking these products for a few days that's when I noticed my gut problems getting worse. I figured this stuff was cleaning my gut and causing it to feel bad but assumed that soon it will all get better. That didn't happen. It's unfortunate that I spent a lot of money on this stuff thinking it would help me when in reality it most likely did me more harm. After doing some research on IBS and going to the SCD website I realized the very products I was taking were doing me more harm than good. Unfortunately, it was too late and now I'm suffering even more now than I was prior to taking these products. Today I took some Digest Gold (legal) before my lunch and I could really tell the difference how much it helped me. I've had less pain after eating for the first time in awhile. I'm trying to do all I can to follow the SCD and I think it's beginning to help me. I need to order some legal probiotics but haven't been able to find any in the health food store. Guess I'll have to go online to get them. Any recommendations? You mentioned prunes and magnesium. I went and brought some natural prune juice (no sugar or preservatives) and started drinking that. Is that " legal " ? I saw prunes were legal but nothing about commercial bought prune juice was mentioned. As a Lyme patient I was told to take Magnesium Malate or Glycinate but I noticed on the SCD site it says to take Magnesium Citrate or Stearate. Is there a reason for this? I noticed that the malate does tend to upset my stomach a bit but it helps me with my cramps which is common with Lyme patients. I guess I'll have to look on the SCD supplement websites to see what is recommended. Any suggestions? Glad to know you are improving. I hope things continue to get better for you. Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. > > > > Hello, > > > > I'm new here and have been learning a lot about the SCD over the past few days. I have IBS and Lyme Disease. Guest guest
Kim, Thanks for your informative post. I read about Miralax and there are many good reviews on this product on Amazon and other sites as well. Seems to be a good product, however, it has a warning on it for those who have kidney disease. I have kidney disease so I will need to check with my Nephrologist about this and see if maybe it will be alright for me to take this short term. I do take a powdered buffered vitamin C but probably need to increase it a bit. I did take magnesium malate but it upsets my stomach. I noticed that magnesium citrate or glycinate is what's recommended on the SCD. Any recommendations on which brand to get and where to get it? Does it upset your stomach when you take magnesium tablets? I need to start on this just because of the cramps I've been having lately. Plus if it helps with my bowels that would be a big bonus! : ) I do drink a lot of water everyday, about four liters daily. I just started taking some prune juice this afternoon after reading what you and another poster said about it. Hopefully this will help. I also take 75 mg of zinc-carnosine twice a day. It's supposed to be helpful in healing the gut. Hopefully it's a " legal " substance on the SCD. Do you know about this? I sure do appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. Glad I found this place as I have a lot to learn and this seems like a good place to come and learn and get support as well. Sure hope you get better with your GI issues. Thanks again! > > > > There aren't any legal fiber supplements; all contain illegals or are damaging to the intestinal walls or upset the gut ecology. The foods we eat on SCD provide plenty of soluble and insoluble fiber -- eventually. During the first months or years on SCD it can be difficult to eat the foods that provide enough fiber. And healing phases also seem to cause constipation for some people. You're in a detoxing stage, being in the first month on SCD, which makes things more tricky when it comes to digestive motility. At least it was for me. > > I deal with chronic constipation too. I have digestive motility issues along with functional upper GI issues which limit the amount of fiber I can eat. The longer I was on SCD the more improved my digestive motility, so I had lowered the dose of Zelnorm considerably. Two years ago the FDA pulled Zelnorm from the market, so I had to do without. It is safe to use daily, per my doctors; I've been on it six years now. It works by retaining more water in the stools as they travel the intestinal tract. Miralax does take 3 to 4 days to work, however. Which is good, as it is less damaging than stimulant laxatives. I find Miralax in any drug store and even in the big chain stores like Walmart and Target. Without Zelnorm, I seem to need the full 17gm daily dose of Miralax in combination with magnesium. > > I also take a magnesium supplement nearly every day, partly for constipation issues, but also to prevent severe muscle cramps. I add the magnesium to water, but you can also find it in a capsule form. Also helpful: staying hydrated, higher levels of vitamin C, extra magnesium. My digestion doesn't tolerate much fruit, either, but after 4 years on SCD I was finally able to tolerate an occasional prune or prune juice. That helps too. > > Kim M. > SCD 5+ years > Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction 6 years > slow but steady neurological deterioration 3 years > > >>>>>>>>>>> > However, over the past few days I've not been able to have a regular bowel movement, and when I do have them, it's compacted together and looks like stones. Guest guest
, See my answers/comments below... Misty > Yeah, well, I'm 56 years old and I've eaten like there is no tomorrow. Lyme disease sounds terrible. I know Jodi on the list has been battling it forever. It's unfortunate that I spent a lot of money on this stuff thinking it would help me when in reality it most likely did me more harm. I was doing the exact same thing before I found SCD. The Garden of Life guy fails to mention that he did SCD prior to founding his own diet which is very profitable for him. I drank aloe vera juice like crazy. I did colon cleanses. I did everything I could find on the Internet. The ONLY thing that has helped is SCD and this group. THIS GROUP ROCKS!!!! > After doing some research on IBS and going to the SCD website I realized the very products I was taking were doing me more harm than good. Guess I'll have to go online to get them. Any recommendations? Lucyskitchen.com She has been on the diet for 15 years. She has legal acidophilus, calcium, b vitamins, multi vitamin and a couple other things. She also has a wonderful easy to follow cookbook. I have several and her's is simple. I take her acidophilus, b, and multi. If you are also battling yeast, you can take S. Boulardii which is a good yeast that helps. I got mine here http://www.giprohealth.com/saccharomycesboulardii.aspx > You mentioned prunes and magnesium. I went and brought some natural prune juice (no sugar or preservatives) and started drinking that. Is that " legal " ? I saw prunes were legal but nothing about commercial bought prune juice was mentioned. I think commercial prune juice is ok as long as it is has no other ingredients. I make my own because it's fast and cheaper than buying prune juice and I go through so many prunes. Pecanbread.com has a list of legal supplements and what's legal and illegal as far as fillers and additions. Pecanbread.com is a website that was created and maintained by the mothers of autistic children but they follow SCD and have a lot of great suggestions and information. http://pecanbread.com/p/Sup1.html > Glad to know you are improving. I hope things continue to get better for you. Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. I am SOOOO much better than I was 2 years ago. I really feel like I have my health in my own hands. People that are on meds for IBD still have flares from time to time. Now when I have one, I know what to do to get it under control without meds. I have resigned to the fact that one day I might have to get on something to keep my symptoms under control while SCD still does it's magic, but hopefully that day will never come. Guest guest
, When asking about something specifically, it's best to provide an online link to the product or at the very least the full name and all ingredients so the experienced SCDers can chime in on legallity. Guest guest
Misty, Good idea. Here's a link to the Theralac I was talking about in a previous post: http://www.theralac.com/Default.aspx Here's what it's got in it: Five Probiotic Species: Lactobacillus acidophilus – 10 billion CFU (Strain LA-1) Lactobacillus paracasei – 5 billion CFU (Strain F-19) Lactobacillus rhamnosus – 2 billion CFU (Strain LR-44) Bifidobacterium lactis – 10 billion CFU (Strain BL-34) Bifidobacterium lactis – 3 billion CFU (Strain Bi-07) Formulated at 40 Billion Colony Forming Units - Guaranteed at 30 Billion Colony Forming Units (CFU) through expiration. 2 prebiotics that stimulate probiotics - LactoStim® (patent pending) and Lactoferrin. Natural acid-proof gel formulation utilizing sodium alginate and grape skin extract protected by US patents 7,122,370 and 7,229,818. I know at least a couple of the strains are illegal, however, many people with IBS (including those on the SCD) claim this probiotic helps them. I was wondering if there were others on this forum who take Theralac and get good results? The other product I mentioned was Zinc-Carosine. Here's a link to a brief article on it: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0NAH/is_2_35/ai_n13796240/ It's mostly used for people with ulcers and h-pylori, but it's also been successfully used by people with IBS. The one I'm taking now is Zinlori-75 by Metagenics. You can read up on it here: http://www.metagenics.com/products/a-z-products-list/Zinlori-75. I read this can take up to five to eight weeks to be effective. I've been taking it for two weeks and can't say for sure I've noticed any improvement. Unfortunately, I was taking other things that were irritating my stomach prior to learning about the SCD at the same time. Hopefully this stuff will help heal my gut in time along with following the SCD protocol. I appreciate your response to my previous post. Lots of helpful information and good links. Thanks so much, Misty! > > >I just started taking some prune juice this afternoon after reading what y I also take 75 mg of zinc-carnosine twice a day. It's supposed to be helpful in healing the gut. Guest guest
Well, that's not legal. So no one here is going to advise you to take it unless they do so offlist. Possibly it works for some people, but it is best to start SCD by sticking to its protocol and not introducing illegals, because that way you won't know if the diet is working for you or not. If you later decide your body needs additional tweaks in order to heal, that's another story - and your best bet for advice in that case is to join yahoogroups/healing crow. I know it's frustrating to lay out a bunch of money on fancy probiotics right before starting SCD, only to be told immediately afterwards that they are not legal for the diet, and being advised not to take them, because I did precisely the same thing with some other probiotics, including (but not limited to) some garden of life stuff. One thing that is perfectly legal and has helped a lot of us heal that is absolutely complementary with the diet is the drug LDN - however, before starting that, it is better to deal with your Lyme disease first. What are you doing for that? It sounds like you have some layers of illness going on, and they are probably all impacting each other and worsening the cycle. Mara > Misty, > > Good idea.
