Magnesium and Probiotic questions

Yesterday I drank some prune juice and today (thanks to Kim and Misty who

suggested it) I had some decent (not hard) BM's. For that I'm grateful,

however, I've got a lot of stomach pain and cramping this morning too.

Couple of questions for you all. I just started on the Theralac probiotics last

night and wonder if this could be contributing to my abdominal pain this

morning? I ordered it before I read about SCD and decided to try it because

there are a lot of people who claim it has helped their IBS.

Theralac is probably not a " legal " probiotic on SCD because it has some strains

that are " illegal " but I wonder if any of you have gotten some good results from

it? I've read where some SCD folks say that Theralac has helped them too. My

BM's could very well have improved this morning from taking a Theralac capsule

last night (in addition to the prune juice). I read that it could cause

abdominal pain due to die off of the " bad stuff " while balancing out the good

stuff. Maybe it's just temporary like the instructions says. Any thoughts or

comments on Theralac?

What are some legal probiotics that have worked for you and where do you get

them?

I am confused about Magnesium tablets. As a lyme patient I've been told to take

Mag Malate or Glycinate (best for absorption), but on the SCD the mag citrate or

stearate is recommended. Any reason why these two are recommended over the

other two? I do get an upset stomach when I take magnesium malate but it does

help with my cramping issues. Plus it seems to calm me some too.

What has been a good (legal) magnesium tablet for you and where can I buy it? I

looked around at the health food stores yesterday for this but most of them had

" illegal " substances in them. Hard to find a legal magnesium tablet in the

health stores.

Any suggestions, input and advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you.

I am not sure this is totally legal but when I started SCD 3 months ago,

my long-time pro-biotics was one of the ones with many many strains in

it. I just switched to L. acidophilus, and so far I'm getting it

from swansonvitamins.com. If you go there looking for it, there's a

little idiosyncracy about their search: you must search for

acidophilus, not L. acidophilus or the full name. Those will just pull up

combos with illegal things. This one is item SW283. It's not

particularly powerful, only 2 billion, but I just take quite a few of

them. The other ingredient is gelatin, though they say it may contain a

couple of the other standard fillers of which the magensium stearate and

silica I do not think should be a problem, but not sure about the

" microcrystalline plant fiber " (which do not bother me if they

are there). I'm looking for a more powerful one but so far this

seems OK for me. I had no trouble with the transition from the

other brand.

What are some legal probiotics that have worked for you and where do

you get them?

Marilyn,

Threelac http://threelac.com/ and Theralac http://www.theralac.com/ are two

different probiotics. I know they are both illegal and I'm not suggesting that

anyone should try them.

I've been searching all over the net the past few days looking for ideas on how

to relieve my IBS symptoms. I noticed that there were comments on other sites

from people who follow the SCD who said that they got good results from

Theralac. I was just wondering if anyone here has tried it and gotten good

results from taking it.

For the past two days since I've been following the SCD I've been doing a little

better already. I admit I'm taking Theralac because I ordered it prior to

discovering the SCD and I wanted to see if it helps any. Again, I'm not

suggesting or encouraging anyone else to try this. Just telling you what I'm

doing.

By the way, I'm taking Digest Gold (legal)

http://www.enzymedica.com/products/Digest_Gold prior to each meal and it really

seems to be helping me. Glad I found the link to this on the SCD website!

I appreciate your input.

My experience with bifidus is that it overgrows and brings the symptoms

back, even if you have temporary good experiences with it.

I've had IBS since 1976. Believe me when I say I tried darn near

everything on the market.

I will never forget the morning in 2000 when I opened the Waldenbooks at

Oakwood (Gretna, Louisiana, closed in 2001). I was the only employee in

the store. Around 10:30, I had explosive diarrhea – and could not leave

the sales floor to clean up. I had to call another employee and beg them

to come in – and they took an hour and a half to get there. Meanwhile, I

hid behind the cash register, feces running down my legs, continuing to

ring out customers and praying I didn’t have to leave the register. When

the other employee arrived, I tied my sweater around my hips to hide the

brown stains all over my trousers. I took paper towels and cleaned up the

mess on the carpet behind the register. I walked out, hoping no one would

notice it was me dribbling all over the tiles on my way out of the

mall.

SCD, and SCD alone, with the recommended probiotics of l. acidophilus and

s. boulardii, cured these issues.

Marilyn,

Oh boy, that must have been quite an embarrassing situation for you back in

2000. I can't even imagine going through something like that. So far I've been

fortunate not to have the " D " problem.

The point you made about bifidus does concern me with the Theralac probiotic.

So far I've been taking it for three days and I feel like I'm improving. Of

course, I'm following the SCD protocol too, so I can't say that the Theralac has

anything to do with my progress. I'm going to continue to test the Theralac for

a few more days and see what happens. I know it's risky but with Lyme disease I

think it might be something I need since I was on tons of antibiotics for five

years. I'm no longer doing antibiotics due to the horrible side effects and the

way they tore up my stomach.

*Just to be clear, I'm not encouraging anyone to deviate from the SCD in anyway.

For my own curiosity's sake I need to see how the Theralac works for me.*

SInce starting the SCD, along with some natural supplements (legal), I'm am

doing better so far and hoping and praying that continues. I got rid of a whole

lot of supplements that I thought were helping me, but after finding the SCD

website I realized the ingredients in those products, plus some of the foods I

was eating, were aggravating my IBS really bad. I'm going to look for the legal

probiotics and purchase some of those online soon.

Sure glad I found out about SCD and this forum!

Thanks for your input, Marilyn. I appreciate it!

It was -- and you can see why, when I found SCD about six months later, I

said, " This make so much sense! " (My primary care physician's

response, when I called, begging for help was to stop stuffing my face,

lose a little weight, and it'd all clear up. Oh, and to take a little

lomotil if the situation bothered me.)

But... and this is the big issue... it still took me another couple of

months to decide to do SCD, because I was a starch and chocolate junkie.

I was on antibiotics about every 3-4 months for years because of repeated

respiratory infections.

SCD isn't easy. But SCD-legal probiotics, especially including SCD-legal

yogurt, repopulated my gut nicely.
