And I'm even more astonished about the heavy cream. Where do you live? Can you get milk (with the cream content) from a farm? Have you ever talked to the managers of any of the stores in which you've looked for "real" milk and cream? Surely there are other people who don't like their milk and cream doctored in that manner. I would think Whole Food, particularly, would be open to changing their ways in this regard. n-- I blog at www.ReformedRevelry.wordpress.com

Guest guest
The Whole Foods brand doesn't have additives, IIRC. Guest guest
My Whole Foods carries one brand of heavy cream without additives. It is from Country Dairy. But maybe that's a local product. , mom to > > I can only find half and half that contains Sodium Citrate and Disodium Phosphate. Neither is on the legal/illegal list. Guest guest
n, I am too, as I am an avid label reader, and consider myself an educated consumer whos peaks regularly with store managers. I live in suburban NJ/NYC suburbs. Farms near me are west and south more than 1.5 - 2 hours away. You'd have to know a bit about the culture here -like anywhere else, but in the recession economy, it truly is survival of the fittest. The WF does carry a pure product, as does our Trader Joe's but, sales are down. These products as you know do not contain preservatives and fillers expire quickly; they have not been selling well. So the stores have stores have moved to less expensive products (read longer shelf life/higher profit margin products) that contain more fillers and questionable items. It truly is amazing about the trickle-down effect of the recession here. I found a raw milk delivery co-op (illegal to buy raw milk in NJ)and plan to sign up for it, but before I commit to the pasture fed meats and heavy cream/half/half, I just want to try a small batch first to see if I like it/need it. Hence my dilemma about what I could find " locally. " Frustrating. Kim > > > I can only find half and half that contains Sodium Citrate and Disodium > > Phosphate. Guest guest
Intersting Mara; I did not see it/perhaps out of stock. . . Both WF and TJ's used to carry Garelick Farms brand, and this is the brand that I referenced earlier that they stopped carrying because fothe short shelf life. For WFs, it depends on the branch - I guess the manager of each department makes some of those decisions. For TJs, I was told, all NorthEast stores get the same goods, it's a regional thing. And I know my TJs carries one, if not two half and halfs that are okay. One is ultra pasteurized, the other not. As well as cream. Kim, I believe you recently mentioned you were using blanched almonds in almond milk and that it made the almond milk creamier? I was wondering where you were purchasing those almonds, and at what price, if they made the almond milk significantly more expensive. TIA, Mara
