Guest guest
In my experience, flax alone will not do the job. Borage oil or black current seed oil are both excellent for the eyes. I take flax along with the borage. Borage 1300 mg, once a day, and Flax 1000mg once or twice a day. Vitamin Shoppe has great prices and good products. They are online. REMEMBER it takes up to 2-3 months to feel the full effect, so hang in there. Kate

Guest guest
(Although the tv commercials wouldn't want you to know it...) Ground flax seed is the least expensive and (according to my naturopath) most effective way of getting flaxseed oil into your diet. You can buy it in bulk at a health food store VERY inexpensively and grind it in a little electric coffee grinder (about $10 at Target, etc.). You wouldn't want to share with your regular bean grinder... Two tbls a day or so of fresh-ground seed (you want to keep the seeds in the refrigerator and grind them as you use them) was the dosage recommended to me. It tastes good in salads, on yogurt, in smoothies, etc. Suzi __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Flax is a common allergen, so you may want to test the flax out by itself so you know your reaction. When I take flax oil or seeds my rosacea flares since I am allergic to flax. I now take Eskimo-3 fish oil. You can get a bottle and take a teaspoon per day to avoid the geletin cap (gelatin is high in arginine so I avoid them). The fish oils is actually the best source of omega 3 fatty acids. I wish I could do flax, though, since it is also a good source of omega 3's and it tastes nice. The fish oil tastes ok, but not as good as flax. Guest guest
For me, flax seemed to upset my hormonal balance. I was getting spotting between cycles and longer periods. When I stopped taking it, these issues cleared up. I do much better on omega-3 fish oils too. Another thing that helps me is eating a few servings of salmon per week. I guess some of Dr. Perricone's suggestions have worked for me... Take care, Matija > > In my experience, flax alone will not do the job. Guest guest
That's interesting that some of you have that problem with flax seed oil. I've been taking it for about a year now and for the past 6 months I've had spotting in between menstral cycles too and the doctors can't figure out why. Now I'm wondering..... What is the name of the supplement you've all used to replace the flax - is it just Omega-3? Do they come in capsule form at health stores like GNC (this is where I buy the flax capsules). Thank you so much - as of today i'm stopping taking those; also, how long did it take for you all to get " regulated " and for that spotting to stop? Thanks, Donna

Guest guest
me too. Flax seed totally messes up my cycle. Even a tablespoon would cause some kind of disruption (without being too graphic!). Just goes to show even foods can have a major impact on the body... > >To: rosacea-support >Subject: Re: flax seed oil >Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 19:09:17 -0000 > >For me, flax seemed to upset my hormonal balance. Guest guest
I suspect that the problems that you are having with the flax seed is that it is very high in phyto- estrogen (plant estrogen). I was eating a lot of flax seed to help replenish my estrogen levels due to the hysterectomy that I had. I can't seem to get enough plant estrogen to make up for not producing the real stuff so I'm on HRT. Flax seed is one of the highest producers of phyto-estrogen in the plant world. If you need supplementation, it is a great way to get it. Maggie in central Oregon Re: flax seed oil >Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 19:09:17 -0000 > >For me, flax seemed to upset my hormonal balance. Guest guest
I'm following the flax seed discussion with interest... I'm 40, and my cycle has been getting a little shorter due to perimenopause. EFAs have helped me regulate my cycle. I take oil of evening primrose and ground flax seed. They help considerably. Less cramps, less pms, etc. ... so there is definitely a hormonal response. I was also taking fish oil, but got really sick of the aftertaste, so I'm looking for a new capsule source. If you're male, ignore this post. Times like this make me wish I had chosen a " nom du plume " . Gosh, Suzi, thanks for posting -- I am making a connection here! I started sprinkling 1-2 T ground flax seed (cold-pressed vacuum sealed bag purchased at GNC, kept refrigerated) on my cereal in the morning for the past several months, in the hope of helping my rosacea. Reading your post, I just realized that maybe the flax seed oil is what's regulated my menstrual cycle back to what it used to be. I am 41 and my cycles had gone down to an average of 24 days, then the last few months, they've been back to 28 days and I wasn't sure why. Sounds like it could be the EFA. I haven't noticed any difference in my rosacea symptoms but now I'll definitely stick with the flax seed. Heidi

Guest guest
I wanted to ask where people buy their flax seed oil. Just any health food store or WFs? Also, I've heard it is a very unstable oil and doesn't keep long - so what do people do to keep it fresh - just buy a small bottle and keep in the fridge? Also, anyone know a source for buying a large-ish bottle of avocado oil at a discount or a reduced price? Mara
Guest guest
Mara, They say Barleans is the best brand to use. Make sure where you buy it keeps it refridged (I have seen places that don't) Buy it in a place that has really high turn around. They have a couple of different types.. http://www.barleans.com/ Get the smallest bottle. It's best not to keep this over a month which is quite difficult. Marilyn sometimes speaks of squirting some fresh vitamin E as a natural preservative in oils. IMO though if you are using it for ALA purposes you are much better using borage oil since there is much debate if we convert the ALA from flax properly. Budwig's work explains that we need to mix it with a no fat quark/yogurt in order for it to be absorbable and bioavailable for the body. I've encountered two schools of thought on flax seed oil. In a book on Omega fatty acids, it was stated that flax oil was used as an every day oil in thousands of kitchens for hundreds of years, so it is therefore very stable. Another school of thought, from Healing Crow and SCD lists, is that flax seed oil is very unstable and goes rancid easily, so should be purchased in small quantities and kept in the refrigerator. Me, I add the contents of at least one 400 IU Vitamin E to my various oils to help keep them fresh. I legitimately do not know, although I do know that some people have trouble converting the fatty acids in flax oil to the fatty acids we can actually use, and should therefore use other sources. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
