Thanks for the info - but do you

Realize that you are not giving up CARBS. You are giving up STARCHES.

There's a difference. There are plenty of carbs in fruit, honey, properly

prepared yogurt, and certain vegetables.

SCD tends to normalize your weight -- people who need to lose, do, and

people who need to gain do.

Do you think it's a bonanza for the bacteria, or such a minute amount

that it doesn't matter? I'm hoping the latter, since Elaine did allow a

couple products with illegals (salt has dextrose, a couple supplements

for ASD kids at pecanbread have rice bran).

It depends.

Keep in mind that Elaine said that we should always take necessary,

prescribed medications, even if they have illegals in them.

That's what I did after my surgery... but I found that the amount of meds

they had me on, and which meds were formulated with lactose, was an issue

for me. However, keep in mind that my meds included not only the lactose,

but NSAIDs, as well, and NSAIDs are contraindicated for people with

IBS/IBD. So it could have been the combination of the two which caused my

problems.

I achieved a new plateau of healing when I (recently) became

aware of/eliminated 2 supplements that I discovered contained illegal

ingredients (croscarmellose & boswellia extract). Even though other

conditions may require the use of meds try to weed out as many illegals as

possible.

On a bright note, I am watching my hair, which was nearly all white

just 3 years ago, grow out in shades of brown (my original hair color). I

can only guess that after 2 years on the SCD my gut was healed enough to start

absorbing zinc again. Zinc is associated with hair color, but I’ve

forgotten the science. My point being that as your gut heals and is able to

absorb nutrients again, your need for high volumes of supplements may diminish,

as mine did. I still take a B Complex daily (half in am & half in pm) and

cal/mag & D3, but only a multi-vitamin every couple of days. That feels

adequate to me at this point.

I have some supplements that contain

illegals. This isn't because I am approaching SCD in a carefree manner,

but because certain things I have to cope with require them: hot flashes,

pain, osteoporosis, to name a few. I would dearly LOVE to heal

sufficiently to absorb enough nutrients to get my supplement pile down a lot as

it's a bit of a handful with each meal. But I just can't do it yet.

Some things I have managed to find other brands that were legal, but some, not.

It's just the way it's going to have to be for now. Having said that (red

face here) I just discovered the other day that my hydrochloric acid (my tummy

doesn't produce any) has maltodextrin in it and somehow I didn't notice

that! Trust me, a better brand is winging its way to me right now!
