Hi Ann,

Dates are totally legal YAY! we just have to watch out that they haven't been

coated in like a syrup solution so they won't stick together. I find buying

dates from the bulk department to be challenging on this level.. but in the

States it is very easy to find perfectly legal dates.

Medjool are a type of date. They are delicious and totally legal!

Whole Foods has dates in their plastic containers and they use no coating..

PS- your subject header really cracked me up!

Hey Ann!

My wife made me sticky date pudding for my birthday, and it was amazing, so I

know why you want to find out about dates. What Elaine says in the book is a

good rule of thumb: if the dates are loosely packed, and the ingredients just

says dates, they should be okay. If they are chopped up already when you are

buying them, and they stick together in lumpy mass, then usually illegals have

been added to make them sweeter or more processable (starches OR sugars). So

look for loosely packed. I was able to find some in teh dried goods section of

Whole Foods, and that worked out great. They had the skins on them, and I think

if you want to removed the skins, you pour boiling water over them, and then

pass it through a food mill, then heat on teh stove to reduce teh water you

added. Complicated, maybe, but that sticky date pudding was worth it! Let me

know if you need the recipe!!!

Ann,

The major thing you have to look for is whether or not the dates have

sticky syrup on them. (Why anyone would put sugar on something as sweet

as dates, I don't know, but then, I'm the one who also doesn't understand

why most commercial broths contain HFCS or " evaporated raw cane

juice " or some other euphemism for SUGAR.)

Medjool dates are the biggest and richest dates.

I find mine at Whole Foods.

I have never ordered from this website, so know nothing about them, but

they have lots of really nice pictures of different kinds of dates.

They have them in TJs and Costco, too, as well as some regular (but

good) supermarkets.

I have to agree....dates are fantastic. Occasionally as a treat I would cut a

medjool date in half and put a little bit of peanut butter in it. I use them a

lot as sweeteners. So yummy! And speaking of...., that sticky date

pudding sounds amazing! I would LOVE to get the recipe!

Another yummy date treat is to cut the dates just through the top half and put

in a toasted pecan. I took these to a party for an appetizer and they were all

eaten very quickly.
