" When I got married 24 years ago I probably weighed about 185. Does

that seem like a reasonable goal. I guess if I got under 200 I would

be pretty thrilled.

How do you establish a goal weight? "

You bring up a good question Becki...

Since predictions of weight loss for this surgery are 70-85% of our

excess weight... Should our goal weight be in that 70-85% range or

should out goal weight be our ideal weight?

I've read that our bones are more dense and weigh more due to having

to sustain more weight than the norm over the years. So that

ordinarily, say a goal weight of 140, would not be practical.

Maybe rather than a particular weight, maybe a size would be a more

appropriate goal? Still leaves you with the question... how do you

establish that goal?

Just being under 200 would be heaven wouldnt it?! (about the same

weight and years married)

Becki:

There are dozens of BMI calculators out there, one at nearly every surgeon's site. I have found that the one at Dr. Keshishian's site has an added feature of telling you what your "ideal" body weight would be. He arbitrarily says that a BMI of 27 would be ideal. For me that would be 177 pounds. Simply go there, enter your current weight and height and it will give you your current BMI as well as your goal weight of 27 BMI. You may choose to adjust that but it's a pretty good number to hang your hat on. The URL is
