Is it important to have surgery done near where you live?

I am faced with a dilemma. I met with two surgeoins, (one in New

York and one in San Francisco, where I live).

I prefer the surgeon in NY due to his personality, his sense of

caring and generally feel more confortable with him. It would

require be being out of town for the surgery, but fortunately all my

brothers and sisters live in the NY area.

A concern my brother brings up is, wouldn't it be better to be living

near the surgeon in case of any problems arising? What do you all

think? I plan on staying in NY at least 4 -6 weeks after the surgery

and will do the quarterly followups in NYC. Has anyone experience

any problems more than 4-6 weeks out that required them to go back to

the surgeon before their normally scheduled follow-ups?
