In fact, the worse my heartburn is, the worse my mucous is. I haven't been able to tell if it's from dehydration/lack of moisture, or if it's an irritation of the mucous membranes from the acid...or perhaps something else. Kathy,

Speaking as one who was diagnosed with complex sleep apnea, which I had

no idea I had, I highly recommend that you request your PCP send you for

a sleep test. Many things relating to sleep disorders in addition to

apnea can be diagnosed through one of these.

Being diagnosed was the best thing which ever happened to me, although

last year this time, I certainly didn't think so, 'cause getting the

diagnosis of another major health challenge after having just come

through cancer surgery was NOT what I wanted! But it's worked out very

well.

Kathy,

I have had the thick mucous thing for years.

Everyone makes fun of me as I will sporadically need to " scratch " my throat and

they say I sound like a frog horn.

Often times it gets so bad that I feel like my breathing gets choked up. I must

run to drink water.. as I cannot function/talk etc.

Sometimes it is just thick and white looking and very sticky.

I have a sleep study scheduled.. I avoided one as I was told only obese people

have sleep apnea.. But that is not the case.

I also found dairy to bother this too. I was dairy free for about one year on

SCD.

When I feel better no thick stuck mucous feeling either!

I knew you would dig this group- I sure do.. Marilyn runs a fun and educational

ship!

Hi n-

If Crohn's is an auto-immune disease, then

why does the immune system work wonderfully

with just doing SCD? My daughter is on no meds,

just SCD, and her Crohn's totally reversed itself

through the diet. Her immune system is no

long "attacking" itself- sorry....I don't buy the

"auto-immune" thing either. An interesting article

shows how "auto-immune" diseases are all

related- a leaky gut.....

Some people take longer, but I found increasing over a few weeks worked for me. As for insomnia and LDN. I've had a lot of sleep problems over the years also, which of course exacerbated the Crohn's and other problems because I was never able to get enough rejuvenating rest. Now I am, however, on the LDN. But not at first. For the first two or three weeks I did wake up at 2 or 3 am. when my endorphins started kicking in in response to the LDN opioid blockade receding. BUT -- and this is a huge "but" -- after that period of adjustment I began to sleep better than I've slept in many, many years. LDN actually helps you sleep very deeply; lots of REM sleep, which is why many people report vivid dreams while on LDN. Not everyome has those initial sleep problems on LDN. I did, and you might. But if you bite and bullet and allow yourself to get through that, the chances are very high that once your system adjusts to it, you'll start getting the kind of sleep you need, and any fatigue problem you might had (mine was debilitating) will likely pretty much vanish, as mine has. On Day 5 I had an amazing surge of energy and it began changing my life.n

Oh my goodness. I am so glad to hear someone else has this problem. I have

horrid thick mucous that is so uncomfortable. I use a neti pot and I sometimes

take a medication that contains Guafinsin to help loosen it up, but it just

stays or comes back. For months now I have removed certain foods from my diet

thinking the dairy was doing it, but it persists even when I have not had any

dairy for 2 weeks!! I cannot figure it out. Like you, sometimes I feel like I

need to gag it is so bad and other times it wakes me up from sound sleep because

it has blocked my airways. Doctors all say it is sinus related and want me to

take antibiotics, but I won't do that. Though I hate anyone else has to

experience this, I am smiling because I am not the only one, now! Maybe we can

figure something out together!

I suffer with the mucus as well. In BTVC it says on pg

9:

Carbohydrates (sugars and starches) will be discussed in Chapter 5 in

order to understand how some are more likely than others to escape

digestion and, therefore, absoption. It will become clear that when

this occurs, they remain in the intestinal tract and are utilized by the

microbial world of the intestine which depend on this available

carbohydrate for the energy the microbes need to live and multiply.

Yeast and bacteria change the carbohydrates in ways that can injure the

intestine which may respond to these microbial by-products by secreting

excessive

mucus.

On page 19 (chp 4) it says:

Bacterial growth in the small intestine appears to destroy the enzymes on

the intestinal cell surface preventing carbohydrate digestion and

absorption and making carbohydrates available for further

fermentation. It is at this point that production of

excessive mucus

may be triggered as a self-defense mechanism

whereby the intestinal tract attempts to " lubricate " itself

against the mechanical and chemical injury caused by the microbial

toxins, acids, and the presence of incompletely digested and unabsorbed

carbohydrates.

I've always hoped that once I got the bad bacteria slapped down, the

mucus would start to disappear. A girl can dream!

Hi Kathy..

I went a bit fringe and opted for Sauerkraut. I drank the juice!

This is not Elaine's recommendation! As sauerkraut can be considered advanced

for some but it really worked well for me.

I also stayed on S Boulardii and would take SCD probiotics.

I suffered nasuea for the whole of year 2008 when I was diagnosed with UC and LC lymphocytic colitis , autoimmune conditio, it slowly went away once my disease went into remisision, It was like hell the whole year living with constant nausea all the time, it used to get worse if I smelled coffee even from far distance, my GI was unable to help me with the nausea, He kept giving me Nexium all the time saying that it was due to acid reflux, but now I have realised and found the answer the doctor could not give, it was nothing to do with acid reflux, it was due to my colitis.

I am sure once your main disease gets cured or goes into remission your nause will disappear.

As natural therapy I would suggest grapefruit juice, cranberry juice , slippery elm etc etc again nausea.

that was my only symptom when i got sick 2 years ago -it gave docs such a hard

time - it's a vague symptom but had me down to 83 lbs from 100 and i demanded

all the tests that led to my dx - but ..having said that - it was 2 years ago

and the 24/7 nausea was there even well into scd - then I'd get longer breaks

without it - and now - rarely get it - AMEN!! and get scared silly when it comes

that it won't go- LOL -but it does :-)

yours sounds more of a mucous issue though - does anything alleviate that??

having no dairy or breathing hot steam , soup etc ..that in turn may help the

nausea - but there wasn't a nausea remedy for me or anything that made it worse

etc - it's just awful i PRAY yours passes soon

Eileen,Thanks so much for responding. It's really reassuring to know that your nausea eventually started to get better. Mine's been with me about a year now, so I'm hoping I'll see some improvement soon. No, nothing really helps with the mucus issue. I'm wondering if it might not be an acid reflux, or maybe candida. The folks on the group are giving me food for thought. Thanks again for the encouragement.KathyCD 10/08SCD 8 monthsTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 12:56:11 PMSubject: Re: nausea and thick mucus

that was my only symptom when i got sick 2 years ago -it gave docs such a hard time - it's a vague symptom but had me down to 83 lbs from 100 and i demanded all the tests that led to my dx - but ..having said that - it was 2 years ago and the 24/7 nausea was there even well into scd - then I'd get longer breaks without it - and now - rarely get it - AMEN!! and get scared silly when it comes that it won't go- LOL -but it does :-)

yours sounds more of a mucous issue though - does anything alleviate that?? having no dairy or breathing hot steam , soup etc ..that in turn may help the nausea - but there wasn't a nausea remedy for me or anything that made it worse etc - it's just awful i PRAY yours passes soon
