Guest guest
Depends on who you talk to, there are two diametrically opposed schools of thought on this. Even within the Kaiser system, Ruichmond tells you that you can get enough protein through food, and Fremont and SSF both insist that you need supplementation for life. I agree that you do need to supplement, because we no longer absorb anything as well as we used to do. Fremont has their patients take a protein shake each day, splitting it into two four ounce portions so that the newbies can get it all down. If you are using the powder, you should mix it a portion at a time as the shakes will accumulate bacteria once you mix them, and after thirty minutes they are no good. Still, since you did go through Richmond, you may decide to listen to them, they are very adamant about their stand, but all the really successful and long term post-ops I know, take protein supplements. Guest guest
It is personal preference I suppose. I choose to follow the rules set forth by Richmond and get my protien in the foods I eat. I was never a fan of those shakes though to begin with, so it may be easier for me to dismiss it as an option? I added up the choices you have to eat during the day once you are at Stage III and IV and with it spaced out in those three meals, it sure seems adequate. Richmond facitilty strongly discourages use of the protien shakes, you are correct. Kay > >Hi all. Just a brief 7 week post-op update for you. Guest guest
Well, this is one question where there is LOT of disagreement. I will share with you what my thoughts are, and how I reached them. When I was researching my own surgery, I decided to find out what successful long-term posties were doing. I mean people who were at least five years out, healthy, good labs, maintaining significant weight loss. Know what I found? The VAST majority of them were doing protein drinks. So I do them. Part of the attitude I have encountered is that we should be able to get all our protein from food. Well, the numbers don't make any sense to me. One person told me I should be eating three ounces of meat, fish, or poultry or three eggs at every meal. This was at a time when my pouch was supposedly approximately the size of ONE egg! This isn't addressing the concept that we absorb some sources of protein better than other sources. Is the idea that it's okay to burn up our reserves, thinking that we'll restore them later? Sorry, I think that's a dangerous philosophy, and I know too many people who have tried it, and ended up in the hospital with malnutrition as a result. Just my feisty two cents worth! Guest guest
Thanks everyone for your input on protein shakes. I was able to just start stage 2 today and did ok with cream of wheat and cream of chicken soup. Tomorrow I am gonna try unsweetened applesauce with splenda and SF pudding, let's just hope that the pudding will agree with me. I think I will try the protein shakes a little down the line and maybe I will find one I like. I just had my surgery on Tuesday. Tammyspecialkmix2000 wrote: It is personal preference I suppose. Guest guest
Tammy...one of the things I did that was filling and yummy was that I made one ounce of cream of wheat with one ounce of the applesauce, and added splenda. the two heated together (the applesauce and cream of wheat really worked.) Also...I started feeling a bit more hungry on some nights. On those nights, I mixed one half of an ounce of cream of wheat with my cream soup (so 1.5 oz of soup, .5 oz of cream of wheat). It was a way to make the soup more filling...RobynnTammy Whitney wrote: Thanks everyone for your input on protein shakes.
Guest guest
Robynn, I'll have to try these. Yah I add splenda to my cream of wheat and my unsweetened applesauce which is pretty good but I didn't think to put them together.
