I'm a cooking maniac mama right now as our daughter leaves

for college tomorrow. She has always eaten only food we

cooked at home while there--she's a senior. The first year

we had to get a note from the dr. so that she didn't have to

buy the meal plan and so that she could have a freezer in

her dorm room.

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to try and

answer.

|A good friend's college age daughter was just diagnosed

with Chrone's. I'm trying to educate her on the benefits of

SCD, but her mom feels as though she won't be able to stick

with the diet while living away at college. Do any of you

have any experience with trying to stay on the diet while

living away? I don't want to push the diet if it isn't

possible to adhere to it. Thanks in advance.

It's possible, just extremely hard to follow without adding a college setting into the mix. I think all colleges can have "special" meals prepared for people who request it. I know someone at my school had celiac disease and had to have special meals made for her. So, i'm sure something like that could be worked out. Otherwise, it's going to be very frustrating for her. On the up side, once she forms a close nit group of friends i'm sure they will understand and maybe help her with some of the cooking.-UC - 1 yearSCD - 3.5 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 4 pills 3 times a day - hopefully scd will help me get off these!

No more Hydrocortisone or Prednisone!

I have kids in college, but they are not on SCD. They never really enjoyed the

meal plans and preferred to make their own after a while anyway. This girl may

want to feel better than she will eating the college cafeteria food. Although

freshman live in dorms, upper classmen often have access to on campus apartments

with kitchens- so she may want to get one of those and may get permission as a

freshman for medical reasons. If this girl had kitchen access, she could at

least make the yogurt, and some simple recipes. It depends on the girl and her

family. If the college is in a major city, there may be another student on SCD

as well. There is an SCD facebook club- perhaps she can " talk " to another

college student on there for advice.

Worth looking in to.

Hello!

SCD at school is possible. I was diagnosed with Crohn's last year and was able

to start the diet at school and get my health back on track. I'm a junior in

college right now. Last year I lived in the dorms and had to have a meal plan,

but my mom and I contacted the university's chef and explained my special

circumstances. Most universities are understanding about special dietary needs

and cook meals for specific students if they have food allergies or other

dietary needs. I would call the dining services and see what options are

available. My mom also cooked a lot of food that we knew I couldn't get at the

dining hall and I stocked the micro fridge in my dorm with tons of food. If the

fridge already comes with a dorm, you may be able to request another one because

of dietary needs.

I know that was a load of information at once, but SCD at college is very

possible. I hope that helps!

Happy Tuesday!

Hi ! (I sent this to your email, but I'm not sure if you received it, so

I'll post it on here too.)

My name is Alyse, and I'm the college student doing the SCD at school. I'm a

junior at Ohio University. I was diagnosed with Crohn's this past March after

about six months of sickness. I started the diet the day after I was diagnosed,

and I have only taken a steroid for my Crohn's. Since then, I've been off meds

for probably four months, and I feel 100 times better than I was before. On this

diet I have gained a little over half of the twenty pounds I lost.

One key reason why I have been so successful with this new lifestyle is my

mom's hardcore cooking skills and the help of the dining hall staff at my

school. Immediately after my diagnosis, my mom and I got in contact with the

head chef at OU and had a meeting to discuss the diet. I had meals made

specifically for me every day. The dining hall chefs, after stressing the

importance of the diet, were able to cook my SCD meals. The head chef made

yogurt for me, but my mom also made me yogurt and would drive it up to me, so I

could make a shake in my dorm room.

Another helpful thing was requesting a second refrigerator/freezer in my dorm

room. That way my mom was able to make and freeze me foods for snacks and

breakfasts. I think my freezer was always fully stocked with pancakes, ice

cream, and almond puffs. I believe most schools will provide an extra fridge or

a larger one for students with food allergies or special dietary needs. That

would be a great question when looking at colleges. It's also important to ask

how accommodating the dining services is to special dietary needs. I know at OU

there is a dietary specialist who handles special meals. Getting in contact with

these people makes the transition so much easier.

Sorry, that was a lot longer than I anticipated. I hope it is a bit helpful. If

you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask. The transition into

this diet and college is scary and can be overwhelming, but it can be done and

for me, personally, it was the best decision. I think having a head start on the

diet before your daughter enters college will make the transition easier.

Good luck with everything and please let me know if there's anything else I can

do.

-Alyse

Hi: I did receive your message and it really was helpful. I've just been overwhelmed trying to learn how to cook all this stuff. . . . we ate a lot of pasta before. She is officially starting the diet this week, but has mainly been following it for the last 2-3 weeks. I have already noticed a great change. She just looks so much healthier, and she is being slowly taken off the prednisone. I really appreciate your response and encouragement. Don't know yet where she will attend college but will look into their accommodations for special diets and I will, if necessary ship boxes with foods : ) Hope your health is continuing to be good and again I appreciate your help. This diet is offering us both some real hope in the face of something that just a few months ago felt like the darkest

news. Mirabelladaughter, Safia, 17 Crohns 6/09Subject: Re: SCD and Living away at collegeTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 5:24 AM

Hello!

SCD at school is possible. I was diagnosed with Crohn's last year and was able to start the diet at school and get my health back on track. I'm a junior in college right now. Last year I lived in the dorms and had to have a meal plan, but my mom and I contacted the university's chef and explained my special circumstances. Most universities are understanding about special dietary needs and cook meals for specific students if they have food allergies or other dietary needs. I would call the dining services and see what options are available. My mom also cooked a lot of food that we knew I couldn't get at the dining hall and I stocked the micro fridge in my dorm with tons of food. If the fridge already comes with a dorm, you may be able to request another one because of dietary needs.

I know that was a load of information at once, but SCD at college is very possible. I hope that helps!

Happy Tuesday!

I'm trying to educate her on the benefits of SCD, but her mom feels as though she won't be able to stick with the diet while living away at college. Do any of you have any experience with trying to stay on the diet while living away? I don't want to push the diet if it isn't possible to adhere to it. Thanks in advance.

Hi: I did receive your message and it really was helpful. I've just been overwhelmed trying to learn how to cook all this stuff. . . . we ate a lot of pasta before.
