Kay:

All I can really say is that this too will pass. Hopefully the sweets won't

get to tasting too good and while I've heard some say that they've had

extensive and permanent changes of taste, I like exactly the same things I

liked before surgery only less of it. It takes a while for things to return

to normal after surgery. I would guess it took Joy about a month. I had

been out of surgery a month before I got out of the hospital so my situation

wouldn't really be comparable to yours, but I can say that when I did get

home there was lots I couldn't eat. Or at least didn't want to eat. Now

there is nothing I can't eat. But lots that I can't eat much of.

Your next post asks about what you can eat without getting over-stuffed

after getting off the liquid diet. Everyone is different but I can tell you

what worked for me. And for Joy. Start out with a " soft " food diet. Lots

of Jell-O, apple sauce, even baby food. Then move toward more solid food.

I cooked lamb strips when we got back to the apartment in Portland. Joy was

about 2-1/2 weeks out of surgery. She handled it just fine. She couldn't

eat very much. She began eating scrambled eggs quickly moving to eggs over

easy when she first got home, a week out. We even snuck in a pint of frozen

yogurt that first week. It took both of us 4 or 5 days to go through a

pint, a significant change from before the surgery.

Drinking does fill you up. At least for a few minutes. Some surgeons give

their patients strict rules about what and how much you can eat or drink for

a long time after surgery. Our surgeon said that we should not eat or drink

to the point of being uncomfortable. That has worked for us.

Again, do not give up hope. Nineteen days is not a lot and things WILL get

better, and pretty soon. Just hang in there and do what you can being

careful to not overdo it.

Regards.
