Hi Kim, Can you sun your body outside for 10-15 minutes/day? I

have read that tanning beds are not safe (but I can’t find the article). As

to fat malabsorption, can you tolerate turmeric? Here is a snip about one of

its properties but be advised, some cannot tolerate this spice:

It

is a cholagogue, stimulating bile production in the liver and encouraging

excretion of bile via the gallbladder. This improves the body's ability to

digest fats. From http://www.turmeric.co.in/turmeric_medicinal_use.htm

Keep in mind that if you use turmeric it is fat soluble –

needs fat with it to work (butter, oil, other fats). It also has

anti-inflammatory properties.

Just a thought,

Is there anyone who has trouble keeping their

Vitamin D levels up and uses UVB radiation? Thoughts? Experiences? I have fat

malabsorption, and my integrative MD has told me I can try this, as long as I

do not burn - kind of like 20 - 30 mins max per week ramping up to 2-3 sessions

per week.

I take 10,000IU of D3 - Carlsons D-Drops, and it just is not doing the trick. I

also take CLO, and am in the process of switching to fermented CLO.

From what I read, UVB rays are the ones that provide the correct light.

If anyone has had success with this, can you share info? Am curious as to if

tanning beds at salons give off UVA and or UVB rays. Also, what about a home

product?

Carol,

Ineresting on the Turmeric. I don't have a gallbladder, but do take bile salts.

My integrative MD has mentioned circumin (?) but I have so much going on that I

have put it on the back burner. I may investigate.

Alyssa & Jena,

I agree completel with going outside. I love outside. I love being in the warm

sun!! I have had alousy summer because of not being well, and have not spent as

much time outside as I would have liked. But my D levels have been hovering low

that my doctor literally sugested exposing " new skin " to the rays (read - buck

naked!), and I wasn't sure I could accomplish that in my suburban neighborhood

without setting off some sort of Desperte Housewives catastrophe drama scene!

I am symptomatic for chronic lyme awaiting some test results, need to have a

lymph node removed and biopsied to be tested for cancer, and have a nwely

diagnosed nerve condition for which I am gearing up to start 6 months of IV

gamma globulin treatments (5 days in a row/month for 4-6 hours per day,- all of

which is very new/overwhelming) - and in thinking ahead to the dreaded winter

where it is tough for me to be outside in the cold because of the nerve thing,

got a little ahead of myself I guess.

So, maybe I should just focus on the present . . .(?)

Thanks for the thoughtful reminders -

Kim

The active ingredient in turmeric (and ginger root) is curcumin.

I bought a bag of empty vegetable capsules and put the spice into those

(warning – turmeric will stain anything it touches yellow). I cook with

it a lot also. I can no longer eat scrambled eggs without it!

As far as sunning yourself outdoors, the backs of the legs

(calf) are best for Vit.D absorption – you can get adequate amounts by

being in the sun (dressed in shorts & tee shirt if you must!) for 10-15

minutes. Your skin does not have to turn red.

You do have a lot going on – I’m so sorry you’re

not feeling well. I hope all goes well for you.

I saw something about this on the news quite recently actually. Here's an

article that covers what I saw:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090729/ap_on_he_me/eu_med_tanning_beds_cancer

THe statistic that scared me was how your risk of skin cancer jumped *75

percent* when people start using tanning beds before 30. Scary stuff!

I read Mercola, and did notice that he sells beds too.

Interesting about the psoriasis link.

Turmeric in eggs sounds interesting . . .

Jodi, what is your smothered chicken?

My integrative MD tells me that as long as you are consuming healthy fats (SCD,

Nourishing Traditions, etc, and no trans fats, the risk for skin cancer is

eliminated with tanning beds, something to do with transfats being converted to

an even more dangerous chemical in the skin cells and, when added to the UV

radiation, is a recipe for skin cancer.

I will ask for more information, but has anyone else heard of this?

Kim,

On the Psoriasis forum they discuss UVB radiation because it's an effective treatment for Psoriasis:

http://talkpsoriasis.org/showthread.php?t=38716

I developed Psoriasis as a side effect of Humira. I was involved in an intensive treatment that included UVB therapy and I wound up with 3 squamous cell cancers.

This is not everyone's experience. But if you choose to go ahead, I'd be very careful.

UV Radiation for Vitamin D

Is there anyone who has trouble keeping their Vitamin D levels up and uses UVB radiation? Thoughts? Experiences? I have fat malabsorption, and my integrative MD has told me I can try this, as long as I do not burn - kind of like 20 - 30 mins max per week ramping up to 2-3 sessions per week. I take 10,000IU of D3 - Carlsons D-Drops, and it just is not doing the trick. I also take CLO, and am in the process of switching to fermented CLO.From what I read, UVB rays are the ones that provide the correct light. If anyone has had success with this, can you share info? Am curious as to if tanning beds at salons give off UVA and or UVB rays. Also, what about a home product?TIA,Kim

New evidence shows it takes up to 48 hours for your body to absorb the vitamin D generated by UVB exposure. When we wash with soap, we wash away the D3 that hasn't been absorbed. Not too many people wait 2 days before bathing...Woah! I had no idea. What about washing with honey or something?
