Hi Ron

Welcome to the group, I am so glad that something Robynn wrote triggered something for you and that your hoping to do the surgery. I went through south san francisco and had my surgery in Feb of this year. I live in Vacaville my dr that referred me was from Sacramento , now i go to a dr in vacaville and i guess people from Vacaville get referred to the Richmond program. I think it will be helpful for you if your sister is doing this also, There is a gal who does not post in here but goes to the Vacaville and Richmond and possibly the Vallejo support group who would also be inspirational to you named Tawny and she has to lose as I recall about 100 pounds before she could have surgery, she did it and she had her surgery I think it was in Jan of this year. I am sure its tough the losing weight combined with stoping to smoke. Keep the faith ! looking forward to hearing more from you

Greetings all! I am new to this group, but not to Kaiser's WLS program. My name is Ron and I live in Napa. I've been lurking for a short time to get a feel for the group. Then, Pam B. posted and it could have been me posting the same thing. Of course, my particulars are a little different, but the same story all the same. I started in the program a couple years ago in SSF and seemed to "fizzle out". A year or so later, I started again and got to the point of meeting with Dr. Baggs at Richmond. He told me I'd have to lose 100 lbs. before he'd do surgery and that news devastated me more than I could believe. For whatever reason, he wanted me to lose 20 %, rather than 10%. Plus I have a smoking problem I'm trying to beat. Of course, as you all know, they won't do surgery unless you quit smoking. So I'm in double jeopardy.

In any event, my sister (with whom I share an apartment) started the process herself and has lost about 35 lbs. or so. She inspires me, but I need more support that she does, apparently. Robynn's reply to Pam B. is a very inspirational email for me. I have printed it and plan to re-read parts of it daily. (Thanks Robynn!)

Since my sis has an appt. at Richmond on Wednesday, I'm going to go with her and see what I have to do to get back in the groove of things. I'm hoping they won't make me start over from scratch. That will just suck. Having been obese all my life (I'm 47 now), I need this surgery more than ever. I have too many co-morbidities in my life to not do this. I just have to remember that my relationship with food is a destructive one and I need to win the battle.

I may not be the best poster here, but I'll be here daily, reading everyone's postings and will let you all know of my progress in the program. I'm so glad I found you all.

Hi Colleen... As of today, I have turned a new leaf in my life. I have smoked my last cigarette (I sincerely hope) and all my meals were about half or less of the portions I'm used to eating. Not to mention more healthy foods. That part isn't really so new though. I've been slowly working to cut out most of the fats in my diet for a while now. No mayo, Equal instead of sugar, less red meats and more chicken and fish, steaming veggies, etc.. Whenever I think I want to eat something I shouldn't be eating, I drink some water and tell myself that whatever food it is, isn't my friend any longer. :)

Tomorrow (Monday) morning, I have to see the nurses clinic here in Napa and I'll go weigh myself . I spent last weekend in Kaiser Vallejo for an infection in my legs and weighed in at 529 then. Last Wednesday I was at 521, so at least I'm going in the right direction. <yeah>

I don't know how many of you I may meet on my journey here, but I hope you all will become at least cyber pals. I look forward to getting as much support as I can, and when the time comes, hopefully I'll be able to help someone else along their way as well.

Yay Ron!!! I'm totally proud of you for taking these difficult steps! It will be your last cigarette...I can hear it in your post. You have the sound. You are going to do this. You are going to quit smoking, you are going to lose the weight you are asked to lose...and then you are going to have a successful surgery! Good luck! BBQ Man wrote:

Hi Ron

Gosh you are on a great start ! I am so impresssed, i never smoked and i know from friends

its hard to do. Kudos on the food intake cut back, i did that too in the beginning. I think you have a great plan here and I am hoping that your appointment goes well today, sometimes these things seem like they happen over night, but they really dont, they stew around inside of us for a long time before we are ready to really do it, at least it was that way for me...........

Awesome beginnings !

Ron,Yeah on the quitting smoking! I quit nearly 7 yearsago. What helped me alot was to brush mu tongue oftensince the nicotene stays there for a few days. Also isto take very deep breaths like you were inhalingdeeply on a cig. It helps cause your brain is cravingoxygen. Try it , it really helps.Cecilia--- BBQ Man wrote:> Hi Colleen...
