Guest guest
Hi Holly: Have you visited a local farmer's market? The prices on the beef at mine are very comparable to grocery store prices. Actually, the ground beef is cheaper (unless you are catching it on sale) at $2.79/lb. The roasts and steaks are a little higher but not excessively. Find a farmer's market in your area here: http://www.localharvest.org/search.jsp?st=20&ty=1&nm= Also, if you can find another family or 2, you can usually buy 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 of a cow and split the meat up evenly. Also, they say that local is the new organic as local farmers don't normally use the amount of pesticides and other bad practices that corporate farms do. And, you can ask them specific questions about their farming methods and they know the answers. I find the prices at the farmer's markets in my area have produce at a great price. Find local sources for grass fed/pastured meat here: http://www.eatwild.com/products/index.html There are also co-ops you can join with another family that delivers fresh local produce/eggs and sometimes milk products. It's a lot so unless you have a big family, you'd definately need to group with someone. So far, I haven't found anyone to co-op with me and I don't have a deep freeze to buy a big portion of beef even if I'm splitting it up with someone so I usually buy a few portions of ground beef and a roast or steak pack occassionally. Search for a food co-op in your area here: http://www.localharvest.org/food-coops/ Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - 19 months > > I can't afford to buy organic produce, pastured meats, or A2 milk. I also can't afford to compound my meds, which have things like lactose, starch, and sugar in them. I doubt I'm alone in this. Regardless, I seem to be progressing okay. I imagine this is the case for most people, since Elaine didn't make them requirements for SCD. It would price a lot of people right out of the diet! > > However, I sure wish I had money for those things. I recently had a hamburger made from local pastured meat, and it was truly the best tasting burger I've ever eaten! > > Holly > Crohn's > SCD 12/01/

Guest guest
Thanks Misty :-). I've found good sources for honey through local harvest, but not for meat. There are some nice looking farms in my state (Arizona), but the prices are just more than I can afford. I keep tabs on a co-op (they have a yahoo group) that is somewhat in my area, but their milk/eggs/meat prices don't even touch what I pay at the grocery store (I buy the bulk of my food when it's on special). I do buy a really delicious pastured butter at Trader Joe's though. For some reason, they always have it reasonably priced. When I bought some honey at a not-very-close farmer's market, my mom went gaga for some of the produce there. They had some really nice kale that was different than what is in the store. It would great to be able to shop at a place like that all the time! Holly > > > > I can't afford to buy organic produce, pastured meats, or A2 milk.
