Guest guest
Hi there, I am not the Moderator and I don't know if GABA is " legal. " Just wanted to add my experience with GABA. It hyped me up so much I couldn't get to sleep for 48 hours. Even at a very low dose. So if you choose to try it for your son, start out very slowly. Inositol which helps some people sleep also hyped me up and brought back severe IBS symptoms for me. Proceed with caution. Have you done a search in the archives on GABA? The topic may have come up before. All the Best, Hannah At 06:42 PM 8/11/2009, you wrote: > > >Dear Moderator, >Can you answer my question? Guest guest
Mark I missed your earlier post somehow or other. I've done some research into GABA and serotonin, so your post caught my eye. Your son's GABA with inositol looks fine. The calcium with vitamin D should be fine but it depends on which form you are using. Can you tell me which product you are using or considering? The exact name, I mean. A few forms of the calcium available from Kirkman Labs contain illegals. Most of the time, liquid or chewable supplements contain additives and/or inert ingredients that we want to avoid. Kim M. Guest guest
Any of the SSRIs, which work by increasing serotonin, has the same effect on me as you describe with GABA -- plus they set off my upper GI dysfunctions. It's always amazed my doctors who want to prescribe migraine or anti-anxiety meds. In other words, some of us do well with GABA but can't increase serotonin, and other folks can't touch GABA but need extra serotonin. All depends on the individual, and what types of neurotransmitters our bodies require or tolerate. Kim M. SCD 5+ years >>>>>>>>>> Just wanted to add my experience with GABA. Guest guest
Thanks Kim. Here is the exact name of the Calcium. It is in a capsule form. We open it up and put into pear sauce. Calcium 200 mg - Bio-Max Series - Hypoallergenic. We are going to try and go for as long as we can without the GABA. He seems really good during the day, but night sleep time is going down. He was up at 5:00am this morning. I am logging everything and we will decide later. Iw as surprised to hear that affects some the opposite. Interestingly, ,y wife has been taking it for a while and can't sleep like she used to be able too. She stopped today. MK > > > > Hello, > > I have a question about some supplements my son is taking. Guest guest
The Kirkman Labs calcium supplement you describe is fine -- nothing SCD-illegal in it. One thing I've discovered is that I can't take a GABA supplement every day. The GABA doesn't trigger the severe responses as a SSRI does, but my body works better if I only take a GABA supplement once every 5 to 7 days. My nervous system is already on a regular cycle of doing what I call a "crash" every 10 to 14 days, and one of the early-warning signs of the crash is getting a severe panic/anxiety attack. I haven't found a way to stop the neurological crash, but through trial and error I've found that taking my GABA supplement regularly, every 5 days or so, helps minimize the strength of the crash. And the regular but low dose of GABA keeps my body from going into extreme panic/anxiety mode every few days. My doctors all tell me to take GABA (or the SSRIs they've had me try, or some other medications) every day, but my body just doesn't tolerate that. I need low doses, just enough to help but not trigger other or worse side-effects. Of course I do the research and discuss this with my doctors who are prescribing the meds. to make sure I don't make things worse. I do pay a lot of attention to my body's signals, and go through a lot of trial and error to find what works for me. Kim M. >>>>>>>>>>> Thanks Kim. Here is the exact name of the Calcium. Guest guest
Mark The Zinc 20-mg Bio-Max, Hypoallergenic looks fine to me. No illegals in it. Does your son have any issues with cellulose capsules? You can always empty out the contents from the capsules and mix in water or add to food. I'm currently investigating liquid minerals. The company from which I get ELyte (for electrolyte boosting drink) has started marketing 8 different (individual) minerals in liquid form. My body handles liquids better than capsules or tablets, so this might be a solution for me. As a matter of fact, I mix all my minerals into water or into my electrolyte-boosting drink because they are absorbed better and don't trigger my upper GI symptoms and don't upset my kidneys. I either purchase powder forms or empty the capsules. I see Kirkman Labs now has some liquid minerals too, so I'll have to do some investigation and comparison. I don't know yet if the liquid forms are SCD-legal. Anyway, that Zinc looks fine. Kim M. >>>>>>>>>> Kim,If you would be so kind, could you tell me about this one as well. It is Zinc (from Kirkman). Guest guest
Thanks Kim. We really appreciate it. We mix all of Hayden's supplements into homemade pear sauce. Did you ever find out about the calcium, or could you recommend one? Where do you get your liquid minerals. Thanks again for all of your help. Guest guest
Hi, Maybe I'm the only one who uses d-Ribose but I thought I'd report on my investigation. d-Ribose is one of the things that helps those of use with major energy-producing problems at the mitochrondrial level. Several of the good alternative docs whose newsletters I trust have been recommending it. So I got some. It really does help. It's a white powder, and a simple sugar that apparently goes right to the mitochondria and I guess is particularly helpful for those of us with malabsorption, etc. They say to use it up to 5 times a day for fibro, at least. So, you know what happened. The other day I got to wondering if it is legal. And, ta-da!, d-Ribose is a mono saccharide and is even specifically listed as such in this interesting web site on the various kinds of carbs: http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/carbohydrates.html Of course as always this leaves open the question of whether a particular brand has anything else in it, but the basic item is clearly a mono-saccharide and I thought I'd mention this because it really is a help for energy, especially if I have been out in the big bad world or doing some work or something. A scoop of this in water or juice (or on something) really helps. Supposedly it does not in any way affect blood sugar and it doesn't mess up my hypoglcemia, but of course I can't say for sure about a given person's reactions with diabetes.
