Guest guest
Or is this something that is just happening to me?I think it happens to a lot of women, period (heh!), not just IBDers. Though some people get constipated rather than having looser BMs. Mara

Guest guest
Jodi wrote:"Do you gals get looser bowels around that time of the month? I have read it may have to do with Prostaglandins being released?" -------------Hi Jodi,I relate. Completely. The week before my period I crave more protein, fats, and calories, so I indulge and that really seems to help. I don't know if my body is truly craving more calories or not, or if the craving is a nutritional deficiency unmasking itself. I'm still trying to answer that question. I also have uncomfortable periods (bloating, pain, moodiness, fatigue), but nothing next to what they used to be pre-SCD. As to the loose-ness, I take additional probiotics during this time and it helps, but doesn't completely solve, the GI symptoms that crop up before my period. My endocrinologist told me that my uncomfortable periods have to do with suboptimal levels of thyroid hormone, which I've just begun to correct in the past month. I also JUST purchased a Vitamix blender and will begin making wholefood smoothies (different than a juicer in that the vitamix blends the entire veggie/fruit. no discarded pulp.) I'm trying this based on the recommendation of a nutritionist, and because I haven't done so well with mineral supplements and my blood tests show i'm borderline low in Zinc, Magnesium, Calcium, etc. I'm wondering if my lowish nutritional status complicates my periods. I tend to think it does, as proper hormone levels are affected by nutritional status. When you say you have low sex hormones, are you speaking about Est/Progesterone? Or DHEA/Testosterone? I have very low DHEA and Testosterone and borderline low Estrogen/Progesterone. Do you supplement any of the sex hormones?Best, Nina in MA

If I'd known then what I learned from my oncologist last year, that gamma linoleic acid (in evening primrose oil, borage oil and black current oil; all the research on GLA has been done with EPO) could ease out the hormone swings, and that was what she recommended for my post-surgery hot-flashes, I'd've used more EPO during those times. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Guest guest
I have a *horrid* time every month. I basically have a mini-flare every month. This is really frustrating because the book talks about being symptom-free and it just doesn't happen. I can't figure out if it *counts* as being UC symptoms in terms of the " one year without symptoms " that the book mentions. My UC flares up about a week before (and during) and I almost always have to take at least one day off from work because I'm feeling so horrible. Last month it was MUCH better though. I still had UC symptoms but the pain was a lot less (I didn't even have to take any pain killers!!). I'm not really sure why this would be the reason but the only thing that I was doing differently was my diet was restricted to fresh fruit, peanuts and cheese for at least a week before. I had no interest in eating anything else. This time that's not what I've been craving. Mainly I crave " savory. " I'm not sure if it's the fat or the salt but I really go for the cheese. No good if you're interested in losing weight! Guest guest
Jodi, I don't have gut issues like my kids and husband (a fair bit of yeast, but I only notice it when I drink and eat too many sugary things and get a yeast infection, and it takes a lot) but I do get the looser stools when my period. Never thought much of it, no pain or anything. Having a period is so inconvenient with a bunch of kids and a busy life that the loose stool thing just blends in!! I don't think it is that unusual. Guest guest
I find periods disrupt my BMs as well. From what I understand, it's not uncommon to have little flares during that time of the month. I take birth control pills for several months straight (doctor approved), so luckily, I don't have to deal with it much. On another note, I stopped my birth control pills a couple weeks before surgery. I started getting pains in my sides (mostly my left) and other symptoms. I checked back in my journal, and found that this happened every time I took a week off from the pills. I had always thought it was crohn's pain, but now think it's ovarian cysts. After a couple of weeks of increasing pains, I restarted the pills and the pains and symptoms all went away. I wonder if I should be concerned about this... Guest guest
Is Borage Seed Oil as good? That's what I've used on and off and it seems to help especially if you take it a week in advance throughout. I can't take over 1 gelcap per day though or I notice problems.  I don't refrigerate the gelcaps but used to keep the bottled oil you were supposed to take with it refrigerated because it goes bad fast. Can't recall the name and never could stand taking it really.  Debbie 40 cd On Sun, Oct 4, 2009 at 1:07 PM, Wizop Marilyn L. Pre-Bipap, I was using both salmon oil and EPO as anti-inflammatories for my hip pain, and was taking as many as six or eight doses (of 4 1000 mg salmon oil and 3 1300 mg EPO) a day. I expect that's one reason I sailed through menopause... menopause didn't have a chance against that much EPO! Guest guest
Hi Stacey, Have you tried taking Magnesium? Looking at your cravings for peanuts and salt I'm guessing you may have some mineral imbalances/deficiencies. Nothing to be worried about, but during your time of the month it might be useful to take a mineral supplement that has a good amount of magnesium. Or just try magnesium on its own. That will also help with cramping. Kat > > I have a *horrid* time every month. > Stacey
