Guest guest
Hi Chrissy, You mention apples, but if he has to develop his chewing strength, are the apples raw? How about dates or other fruit that are a bit hard? Can he chew on whole pecans, walnuts? Make chewy treats with coconut, like macaroons... Good luck, GERDS and chronic C. SCD 17 mths > > Hey everybody, > > My baby (14 months) is in Occupational Therapy for low muscle tone in his cheeks and torso and is having a speech delay issue. His therapist would like me to give him something crunchy to munch on to develop his chewing strength. He cannot digest veggies, I have tried lots and they all come out similar to how they went in and horribly stinky with the requisite tummyache. He can eat eggs, pecan flour, banana, pear, apple, hamburger, steak, chicken, pork, prosciutto, a tiny bit of almond flour. Any ideas?? > This is time sensitive, so if you can think of anything I need to know soon. Guest guest
Could he tolerate a “zwieback” type of cracker – SCD legal of course. I’m thinking a cracker that has been baked and then dehydrated to the point that it is really crunchy. Guest guest
Maybe a " biscotti " recipe? There is one in Cooking for Celiacs. Colitis, Chrohn's and IBs- SCD legal. It has all kinds of goodies in it, like nuts, so it is advanced- but you can make it and take those out of the recipe. You could cut it up into Zwieback shapes and let him gnaw on it. I'll e mail it to you. PJ > > Could he tolerate a " zwieback " type of cracker - SCD legal of course. Guest guest
Hi Chrissy, It sounds like he needs to develop strength in his masseter muscle, which closes the teeth together. I'm wondering if you get him one of the teething rings for babies and put a little Welch's grape juice on it for flavor and then show him to bite down on it ( babies are good imitators) while saying the word 'chew' or' bite' and maybe he'll get the idea and will know what you want him to do. I know babies like to chew on toothbrushes instead of brushing their teeth, so maybe a chewing toothbrush would help him. Check out the teething toys for babies and see what might work for him with some encouragement. It's hard for any 14 month old to really crunch on anything. Zwieback crackers are made to melt in a babies mouth, that's why they are made for babies. I would worry about a 14 month old choking on anything really crunchy, unless I don't remember well what 14 month olds can do. Best of luck, Terry Help for my baby in occupational therapy Hey everybody,My baby (14 months) is in Occupational Therapy for low muscle tone in his cheeks and torso and is having a speech delay issue. They look safe, but engage the back teeth to engage the masseter muscle. Guest guest
Chrissy, I would make SCD crackers with pecan flour. I have a recipe for cinnamon graham crackers which can be made dairy-free. You can also make biscuits out of pecan flour. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
