Guest guest
I am sure that there are some people who are following the SCD guidelines for foods, but who are using multi-strain probiotics. Elaine recommended just L. Acidophilus. I am sure that there are those who are doing okay with multi-strains, but there have been negative reports by some who have tried it. Guest guest
letsdetox: " I am afraid to take probiotics because off yeast die-off. Do you think there is any risk in doing this? " When I first started taking probiotics a couple years ago, I did notice die-off. I became more fatigued and moody. I didn't follow the bottle's instructions to ease into it though. " How long do I need to take probiotics to get a healthy gut flora? " I went to a New Chapter seminar last night, and most of it was about gut health. The educator said for every 5 years of illness, count on 1 year to get gut health back. I have no idea how accurate this is, but I am sure it doesn't happen overnight, and more than taking probiotics is needed- they need to be fed with good diet, etc. I recommend Donna Gates' Body Ecology Diet or Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions for more on that. My probiotic is one supplement that I won't live without. It is important to pick one that is still in the media it was grown in and freeze dried, not centrifuged. The growing media is important too- cheap ones can be grown on sugar, corn syrup, etc. I have tried taking cheap centrifuged probitoics, and I can't tell anything from them. You will know when you are taking a good probiotic (and least I do)! Some I like are Garden of Life's Primal Defense (although expensive), NOW's Probiotic Defense (much more affordable and just as good IMO), and New Chapter's All Flora (also pretty affordable). Bio-K and Natren's Healthy Trinity are also supposed to be good ones, but I don't have any experience with them. Actually I did try Bio-K's a couple times, and I really couldn't tell anything but others swear by it. Someone told me that Bio-K and Natren's contain GMO bacteria. I have no idea if that is true but would be something to look into, if you are concerned about that. -Olif

Guest guest
> > I am afraid to take probiotics because off yeast die-off. Do you think > there is any risk in doing this? Healthy gut flora are an aspect of your digestion and your immune function. You will be healthier and more comfortable if you can get them and keep them balanced during detox. Look up what Andy says under bifido bacteria in the " things to take " section. You may want to check onibasu as well. Starting with a low dose of probiotics and increasing gradually should minimize die-off. If you are not already on an appropriate diet to minimize dysbiosis issues, it's a good idea to establish that first, if possible. > How long do I need to take probiotics to get a healthy gut flora? > It would depend on your individual situation. In any case, you will want to stay on a good dose of probiotics throughout the chelation process. --
Guest guest
For some reason I think the web master removed my previous post, so I'll try again. I just wanted to suggest the pharmax brand of probiotic. They are very big and established in Europe. I'm looking at their brochure now indicating clinical research on the effect of their probiotics in reversing or stopping dysbiosis. So I think it is a good product with some science behind it. Their most concentrated probiotic is a satchet with over 125 billion cells. In their experience lactobacillus acidophilus and two forms of bifdobacterium are the most effective in this process. http://www.pharmaxllc.com/index.asp The supplements are only sold via health practitioners (so probably not the least expensive), but I think worth considering. > > Hi > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > So now I am hesistant to use probiotics. Have you used dosages this high before? Even if not, I would reduce the dose (split the capsule and move slowly with it). Sometimes a new probiotic can cause more or different die-off symptoms than others you have used in the past. > I have some biotin on the way. How does this actually control the > candida? Supposedly keeps it from converting to the fungal form which is more invasive. I have seen it mentioned as helpful in controlling blood sugar too. -- > thanks > Nicola >
Guest guest
Do any of you expert SCD'ers have any successful experience doing the diet with only probiotics and not the yogurt. I am starting to suspect that I may be getting migraines from the goat milk yogurt. I tend to get migraines when I eat any type of dairy, so the cow's milk yogurt is right out for me. I also think I am having problems tolerating nuts, therefore I doubt nut yogurt is the answer. I was thinking of experimenting by refraining from the yogurt for a while and only taking probiotics, but am quite honestly afraid to do so. Other than these blasted headaches and the persistent nausea, so many of my symptoms are improved. Also, if anyone has had success with only probiotics, I would love to know what you are taking. Thanks, gang! Kathy CD 10/08 SCD 8 months

Guest guest
Kathy I developed a sensitivity to yogurt (and cheese) in my 2nd year on SCD, after having worked for over a year to get my body to accept even a 1/4 c. of dripped yogurt per day (immune responses more often than upper GI symptoms). I had already begun to tolerate a legal L. Acidophilus supplement by then (took me 4 months on SCD initially to tolerate even one capsule), so I just stopped dairy and switched over to L. Acidophilus supplements exclusively for my regular probiotics. It has worked well for me, and that was 3 years ago. My immune system doesn't tolerate too large a dose of L. Acidophilus, so my maintenance dose is one capsule every 3 days. I increase the dosage if I'm on antibiotics, of course, but I haven't needed any in 2 years (my dental issues cleared up, finally...) I know all about migraines [sigh] having had them since I was a child. I work hard to keep them at bay, so I can well understand your not wanting to do something to trigger more. I'd give a legal L. Acidophilus or S. Boulardii supplement a try. There are four sources of legal probiotics that I know of, so you have a choice. I have been getting my L. Acidophilus from Kirkman Labs for the past few years, but you can also find a legal probiotic from GIProHealth, Lucy's Kitchen, and Custom Probiotics. Kim M. Guest guest
I did eat yogurt religiously the first 6-8 months on the diet; however, I was still having bloating and gas so I stopped it. I've only made yogurt a few times since and I take the acidophilus supplement from Lucyskitchen.com and the S Boulardii from Digestivewellness.com I think. I know the yogurt is best, but I just don't tolerate it well. I've tried cow's and goat's milk yogurt. The other reason I stopped is because I only have a Eurocuisine that makes 7, 7 oz. jars at a time and I was spending so much time and energy making the yogurt. When I realized I felt a little better without it, I stopped. The last time I ate yogurt, about 2 months ago, I didn't react like before so when I get my dehydrator, I'm definately going to try it. Guest guest
Hi Stacey One tablespoon of scd yogurt has 3 billion good bacteria. You would only be getting the equivalent of one tablespoon. My dad is over in India and he is taking the same product but it has 10 billion in it. He takes 3 a day. Still no where near enough good bacteria compared to his yoghurt but it will do until he gets back.
