Guest guest
Taking things with a grain of salt is necessary when reading about experiences with surgeons on these list. I agree with that. But that doesn't just go for the negative. It also goes for the long, glowing, obsequious posts as well. I chose my surgeon based on facts but a strong deciding factor was the fact that so many posted about his demeanor and what a great guy he was. The twinkle in his eye, etc. I am sorry now that I gave those posts such weight in my decision. There is a " god syndrome " not just with doctors, but with patients as well. Certain patients need to put their surgeons on a pedestal in order to trust them, and a symptom of that is the " long, glowing, obsequious posts " I referred to earlier. Word of mouth is a good way to get info as long as you know what to look for. Look for " facts " that can be substantiated and proven. Weed out references to personality, decor, sense of humor, etc. Those things may be important when it comes to bedside manner, but it's also important to know when they may be masking a lack of knowledge/know-how, or overcompensating for past bad behavior. That's just my opinion based on my experience with online DS/surgeon forums and my own surgery/surgeon. -Sherry (Lake Marcel, WA) BPD/DS Feb. 2, 2001 self-pay 5'5 " / 341 pounds / 33 years old Lost 9 pounds in pre-op weight loss efforts Have lost 70 pounds since surgery!
