Guest guest
Hi all, On Friday, I need to have a body/brain PET CT scan - and it involves a mild fast (6 hours) plus a " glucose " swallow, followed by a barium swallow, and a contrast injection . . . Last time I did the barium swallow I was heavily sedated post abdominal surgery, and certainly was not SCD. Any thoughts on how it will affect me are appreciated. Any tips for after care also accepted! On Monday, I am having a lumbar puncture; I'm planning on being pretty pooped for a few days - Thanks in advance, Kim
Guest guest
Kim, the barium is supposedly an inert substance that is xray dense and will not be absorbed. It may slightly constipate you, depending on how much they give you. The question is, what will you swallow it WITH? When I had mine, they gave it to me mixed with about two packets of hot chocolate for each cup, and I'm pretty sure that's not an inert substance. Do you know what options you have for drinking it? Guest guest
Alyssa, It was more than likely the pizza that caused the bathroom rush, if anything the barium should have the opposite effect. jena On Friday, I need to have a body/brain PET CT scan - and it involves a mild fast (6 hours) plus a " glucose " swallow, followed by a barium swallow, and a contrast injection . . . Aw, no fun =( Last time I did the barium swallow I was heavily sedated post abdominal surgery, and certainly was not SCD. Any thoughts on how it will affect me are appreciated. Any tips for after care also accepted! When I did my barium swallow, I certainly wasn't SCD, and I had a pizza afterwards (sigh). The next day at school, I was sitting on a pot in the bathroom calling my mom to come bring me a new pair of pants =/ So my only suggestion would be to be NEAR a bathroom!!! I have been known to react weirdly to things though. For instance, usually people on prednisone put on weight. Me, I lose it. But you never know =) Pour Dieu, pour terre,Alyssa 15UC April 2008, diagnosed Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)20mg Prednisone 1x daily ugh
Guest guest
I recently had a CT Enterography and had to swallow something called Volumen. I didn't have any overt problems with it. However, the following day, I noticed a fluid filled clear blister on the inside of my lower gum (it was in a place that annoyed me, so I broke it). I used to get those frequently pre-SCD (that same gum spot, and a spot at the back of my throat) immediately after eating, but I was never able to pin down what food caused it. Once, I started SCD, those blisters ceased to appear. Therefore, it's pretty suspicious that the Volumen had some sort of starch or sugar in it. Good luck on your tests! I hope that all turns out well :-) Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > Hi all, > On Friday, I need to have a body/brain PET CT scan - and it involves a mild fast (6 hours) plus a " glucose " swallow, followed by a barium swallow, and a contrast injection . . . > > Last time I did the barium swallow I was heavily sedated post abdominal surgery, and certainly was not SCD. > > Any thoughts on how it will affect me are appreciated. Guest guest
They have told me it will be straight up - like pepto. Nothing to mix it with. They did tell me it can constipate - so I will bring lots of water, and heed Alyssa's advice not to eat anything SCD heavy after - but I'm sure my body will detox itself thru D anyway. I have a huge pot of chicken broth going now . . . Thanks all for the replies. They are not sure why the doc ordered the glucose - that will probably take the most toll on me. Appreciate the assistance . . . Kim
