Barium Swallow for PET CT Scan

Hi all,

On Friday, I need to have a body/brain PET CT scan - and it involves a mild fast

(6 hours) plus a " glucose " swallow, followed by a barium swallow, and a contrast

injection . . .

Last time I did the barium swallow I was heavily sedated post abdominal surgery,

and certainly was not SCD.

Any thoughts on how it will affect me are appreciated. Any tips for after care

also accepted!

On Monday, I am having a lumbar puncture; I'm planning on being pretty pooped

for a few days -

Thanks in advance,

Kim

Kim, the barium is supposedly an inert substance that is xray dense and will not be absorbed. It may slightly constipate you, depending on how much they give you. The glucose I don't know about but the injection will probably be an iodine based injection and may make you feel hot all over and give you a funny taste in the back of your throat and make you feel wet in the lower regions. They might use a nuclear injection also, but I am not sure what that does. Feel free to ask the tech before the scan, they will give you all the advise you need.  good luck

The next day at school, I was sitting on a pot in the bathroom calling my mom to come bring me a new pair of pants =/ So my only suggestion would be to be NEAR a bathroom!!! The question is, what will you swallow it WITH? When I had mine, they gave it to me mixed with about two packets of hot chocolate for each cup, and I'm pretty sure that's not an inert substance. Do you know what options you have for drinking it? Pour Dieu, pour terre,Alyssa 15UC April 2008, diagnosed Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)20mg Prednisone 1x daily ugh

Alyssa, It was more than likely the pizza that caused the bathroom rush, if anything the barium should have the opposite effect.

I have been known to react weirdly to things though. For instance, usually people on prednisone put on weight. Me, I lose it. But you never know =) Pour Dieu, pour terre,Alyssa 15UC April 2008, diagnosed Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)20mg Prednisone 1x daily ugh

This sounds like a pretty good description. I had a similar scan (without the glucose) and they told me to drink a lot of water afterwards. I bought a 32 oz. bottle of water and drank it all. I had no other problems.

I had barium many years ago several times and they sure didn't give

it to me in chocolate flavor or anything. I think it was just the

barium. It was pink and a bit thick as I recall and sort of like

Kaopectate. Not a good taste but not that bad. Of course this was

before SCD so I have no idea if that was just the barium in water or

what. I'd ask, there might be choices. See if you can have it plainer.
