Guest guest
Well, coconut isn't the same as almonds and pecans, first of all. I don't think it is actually a nut at all. Also, are you quite sure you aren't simply allergic to nuts? My kids have food allergies, more appropriately called intolerances that cause all kinds of GI symptoms. That is how we ended up on SCD in the first place and why all my kids are on it and not just the one with ASD. If you are allergic you might get over it eventually once your system is to a certain degree of healing and then again, you may not. No way to tell on that score. Guest guest
Chrissy, I have had so many food allergy tests over the years that I just don't believe in it anymore for me. It can be used as a great guide- but my test results were always all over the place never duplicated. Wildly confusing. Today I know more about how food allergy testing works so it does not surprise me. But no, I have never thought about it that way that I may have a nut intolerance. Hmmm.. That is an interesting line of thought. I seem to love it though.. and boy cashews are like my vice! I get a lot of anal symptoms post surgery from nuts. I also sometimes feel tired and get a headache. Jodi

Guest guest
Your attraction to the very thing that causes problems is what started me down the path of intolerance. My two oldest crave the very things that are the worst for them and the youngest has slight nut intolerancs and LOVES them. He can have them if I rotate them. And the wheat/dairy/potato thing...all three kids and Daddy would eat these things and nothing else quite happily. chrissy > > Chrissy, > > I have had so many food allergy tests over the years that I just don't believe in it anymore for me. Guest guest
Chrissy, I could eat roasted cashews every single day! Same goes for most nuts really. I think I will have to redefine what " intolerance " means. How do you define it? I make a distinction between allergy and sensitivity, how does intolerance in your opinion fit into this picture? I would be perfectly happy not eating nuts- it's just if I do I need tremendous amounts of self control or else the flood gates open.. I loose all sense of proportion and then I suffer. So I rather just go cold turkey.. I feel for me that is why I will have to be super creative long term on this diet as I don't think I can be fruit, nut, dried fruit/veggies, honey, cheese heavy at all. A little here and there of cheese, yea.. My dream is to go backpacking for a couple of months, possibly longer. I don't see how I can do that with my restrictions and possible sleep apnea. Ooops just kept typing again LOL. Jodi

Guest guest
That's funny Jodi, because I have had such a huge nut butter craving for at least the last month. I limit myself to 1 tbsp of almond butter a day (except for the last week, of course), but I feel like I could eat the whole jar! Luckily, my fear of making myself sick keeps me in control. Guest guest
Alyssa.. I always wanted to do the India thing but don't know how realistic this is since super healthy people get really bad D over there. I have a friend that was perfectly (seriously, constitution like a bull) healthy that came back with some horrid intestinal Amoeba. My brother was there and he said everyone gets D from the Chai LOL. He had D the whole time he was there- and he was like in a Yoga community and they traveled together via bus so like no living on the edge backpacking/finding your way kind of thing. I think my next best bet is to go to Australia/NZ and also do this in Spain (I'm a big fan of architecture) This disease sucks. Robs us. I do not know what I would of done without the SCD coming into my life!!! Thankfully my thick skull had the sense to embrace it and work through all the incredibly challenging and difficult times! I just wish I found it sooner would of spared me a heck of a lot of suffering.. You are so ahead of the curve taking matters into your own hands. I have much admiration towards you doing this at your age and being so in tune and figuring this stuff out! Kudos (nothing but compliments your way!!) Guest guest
Hi Kat > I haven't tolerated nut products very well either. I didn't have any in the beginning of SCD and then slowly tried having just a small amount. I kept thinking it was because I hadn't healed enough, and given that so many people tolerate nut butters early on, I was scared to try anything else. This is -exactly- how I feel and what I go through!!!!! > When I finally tried coconut flour I was so surprised. I can eat a lot of it no problem. In fact it seems to help! I find having a coconut flour muffin and some yogurt is a good snack and my blood sugar/hunger stays much more level than if I had nuts. I haven't done too much of it but I was able to eat two macaroons (that I made) no problem. I also took it as a snack outside and it was great! I sometimes feel like I crash after eating nuts. Like I almost get a high or I immediately get sleepy. > Lately I actually tried having raw fruit, and have done well with that too. Then I added dried fruit, and still have done well. I tried adding in a moderate portion of nuts each day, and have loose stool after just a couple days. I just don't seem to digest it. I don't really believe it's food allergies as I can have nut milk as much as I want. It just seems to be that my body can't break down the fibers in it or something. Interesting. AJ from Gay's Google group also says some interesting stuff about nuts... > I also do better with raw walnuts than with any other nut. I can have a handful of raw walnuts a day, but any other nut, or baked goods made from nuts including walnut, I can't have. I think it might have to do with fats. Most nuts are heavy in Omega 6, walnuts have more Omega 3. Most fat in nuts is quite fragile in heat and it could be that baking with it is changing the fats. Coconut is mostly saturated fat which holds up to heat well. Yea, someone told me to try walnuts due to Omega 3. She had also seen that with her kid he didn't go cuckoo with pumpkin seeds (high in zinc) I made some walnut butter (not the yummiest) so I tweaked it and added some spices- nutmeg, cinnamon, sea salt, coconut oil and a bit of ghee. When I have whole walnuts I too stop after a couple if I make the walnut butter I just keep eating it too. > Oh yeah, and I go absolutely mad when eating nuts and basically eat them till they're gone (and then try to convince myself not to run to the store for more). This mostly happens with cashews and almonds. Walnuts, I can stop after just a handful. Weird.. I know.. it's almost like I need a sponsor like for people in AA. I have to really work on myself not to buy more. Interestingly, I have tried to make sure that it isn't the source of nuts either- so I was getting organic pecans sourced from Italy etc.. Made no difference. > Anyways, just wanted to say it's nice to hear someone else in the same situation. I always wondered why I never did well with nuts... I have heard of a lot of people not having self control with nuts but haven't met many that nuts are a problem so far along the diet. If you have any pointers on teh coconut flour and where you buy it that would be great! Jodi
Guest guest
Yep I tried the soaking thing for a while. It did help a little bit, but for almonds and pecans I would still not feel well. I do eat raw walnuts occaisionally now and usually soak them first. I tried raw soaked almonds but the walnuts seem to be digested much better. Kat > > Hey I was reading this thread and I wondered something. Raw foodists usually soak and dehydrate nuts before eating them because it's supposed to help with digestion. Guest guest
Hi Jodi, The only place I have found the coconut flour is at my local health food store. It seems fairly cheap, I buy about 4 cups worth for 2$, and use 1/4 cup for 6 muffins. There's no brand that I see, maybe just the store brand, packaged in a plastic tub. Guest guest
It is very fine and powdery and almost a beige colour. I have some coconut flakes as well which I tried adding to my yogurt and that was pretty nice too. If you can only find flakes, you can put them in a food processor to make it more like a flour. It does grind up better than nuts do (I could never get a fine nut flour with my food processor). Guest guest
Kat, I think that is a good idea taking the coconut flour I have and throwing it the food processor! Mine is a total white color. I wonder if coconut flour oxidizes? Seems unlikely. Jodi
Guest guest
White flour means something was added to prevent the colour change. Just like dried apricots are usually dark brownish, but if they add something then it stays a bright orange/yellow. The coconut flakes I get are white, so they've probably been treated with something. I have never had a reaction to it so I wouldn't worry.
