Per my OB a woman pre-pregnancy should take 400mcg per day. I personally

take 800mcg, which is the equivilant in 2 Flinstone vitamins. I plan to

start trying to conceive in early 2004.

Joy,

Forgive me if I have forgotten, but are you pregnant? If you are I would switch

from the Flintstones to a prenatal, you can get them in chewable form if thats

what you want. If you aren't pregnant and are planning on trying I still would

switch to a prenatal. There are some who take prenatals and a additional folic

acid and others who just take the prenatals, thats something that you should go

over with your OB/GYN. I definitely know that Flintstones aren't good enough to

prepare the body for or sustain a pregnancy.

Ok, I take 2 flintstones a day now. So do I need any additional folic acid?

During my early post-op pregnancy I suffered from severe Hyperemesis

(morning sickness), thruought the entire 9 months I could not keep down my

chewable pre-natals. My Perinatalogist (high risk OB), had me on 2 Flinstone

vitamins a day , every other day I would take 3. I also took a 1miligram

Folic Acid supplement daily. Since I got pregnant at only 7 weeks post-op,

and was very sick I lost 91 lbs during my pregnancy. was born

perfectly healthy, weighing 7lbs 13oz. I know that wasn;t the ideal

situation, but my Perinatalogist watched his growth very closely. I am now

planning on trying to concieve in 2004, and I am on the same regime per my

Perinatalogist. Joy, talk to your OB and see what she/he reccomends. I am

not telling you to follow my OB's regimine, but Flintstones and Addt'l Folic

Acid works well for me.

  • 2 months later...

It seems like way too much to me because you have to consider that you are

getting folic acid in your diet also. I got a list from the nutritionist that

lists folic acid in different foods. I was surprised to learn it's even in

tortillas. If I were you I would cut back on some and try and eat those that

are high in folic instead of supplementing. But definitely talk to your dr.

about what you're taking.

Just my opinion here...

Unfortunately bypass patients tend to mal-absorb folic acid and it is

soooo essential to healthy spinal cord development in a baby. Not

only was I taking 2 pre-nates each day (pre-conception), but my

OB/Gyn advised me to take an extra 1200 mcg of folic acid each day.

He is experienced with post WLS pregnancies, so I have a lot of faith

in him.

Around my 4th month gestation, I was able to lower my extra folic

acid dose to 800 mcg each day.

Good luck to you.

Donna,

Though I'm definitely no expert in this area and I personally know that I could

do better disciplining myself taking ALL my supplements, the only thing that I

would suggest altering in your regiment is instead of doing you usual chewable

vitamins switch to chewable prenatal vitamins. I would also add a calcium

supplement and make sure that it is calcium citrate because thats the one that

absorbs best. Are you coming back to the states soon? Good luck TTC!

Folic Acid

I know their are always posts regarding Folic Acid, and I read them

when I see them. I have a question...how much Folic Acid is

everyone taking? Everyone meaning those of you trying to get

pregnant and those of you that are pregnant. I have moved half-way

around the world to the United Arab Emirates, a middle eastern

country, so don't have my surgeon or my established OB/GYN handy. I

am not sure if there are even any physicians here that do bariatric

surgeries. I expect I will have to educate my new OB/GYN once I get

established. I plan to try to concieve starting in April. My

chewable vitamins that I take daily have 400mcg of Folic Acid, and I

take 2 each day. I also have a Folic Acid supplement that is 400mcg

each. I am currently taking the 2 chewable vitamins and 1 Folic

Acid tab for a total of 1200mcg a day. Any comments or

suggestions? I am curious as to how much your OB/GYN's and surgeons

are recommending.

Thanks!

Donna

The Director of Fetal Medicine at my hospital said for future

pregnancies becasue of my bypass that I would need to take 4mg of

folic acid daily fro at least 3 mo prior to conception.

I beleive that is the same as 4000 mcg but someone with better math

knowledge may be able to confirm that? This is because of

malabsorbtion and in an effort to avoid neural tube defects such as

spina bifida or anencephaly.

The neural tube in babies develops in the first 3 weeks of gestation

so that is why it is important to begin taking the folic acid PRIOR

to conception. That is assuming of course you plan your pregnancy -

which is not always the case as with mine.

you also have to realize the longer you are out form surgery the less you

malabsorb, so this might not be true for someone who is 1,2,3 yrs form surgery.

Yeah like me. I got my labs back and they are all great. In fact I

had more B12 in my ssytem than I needed and I had more iron than I

needed. The doc was very happy with me. :) I'm ummm...going to be

2 years in August.

I'm curious - I've never heard that the amount you mal-absorb changes

with the length of time after yor surgery. Why would that change?

My understanding is that the main reason RNY paitents mal absorb is

the portion of the small intestine that absorbs most of the vitamins

and minerals has been removed. This does not change. Your pouch may

stretch and the supliment may break down sooner but there is still a

specific part of the intestine where that mineral used to be absorbed

that is now missing, forever.

This is how it was explained to me. It is a life long issue. The

Pernatologist said to take 4mg in ALL FUTURE PREGNANCIES - not just

ones that happen right away.

As far as the labs go - All of my labs are great too. But I checked,

and they are not testing for a folic acid level, the lab tech

(probably not the best person to know) was not even sure of a test

for that. It is not part of the regular gastric bypass pannel nor is

it something that you OB regularly tests for when they order your

labs.

Better safe then sorry. Again, the thing is, by the time you know

your pregnant, the time has more then likely passed that you can take

more folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects, which is the

reason folic acid is recommended for women trying to get pregnant.

In all women, not just wls women, it is recommended before pregnancy

occurs - just not in that mega dose - which by the way is best

obtained in prescription form. Taking more through out pregnancy

will not prevent damage that may have occured in those first weeks.

> you also have to realize the longer you are out form surgery the

less you malabsorb, so this might not be true for someone who is

1,2,3 yrs form surgery.
